Electric to pull start?

Recently purchased a boat with a 25 evinrude that has an electric start and it decided to die today. I would like to convert the motor back to a pull start. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I thought most of those came with pull start as well. If it doesn’t then the new cowl and starter assembly and a new flywheel would probably be more expensive than fixing what you’ve got now.

Have you pulled off the cover and looked inside? Some motors have a starter rope under the cowl in a plastic bag for emergencies. It would be pretty aggravating to operate the motor that way, but it could be done. Probably best to get it fixed eother way.

Agreed with the above, the conversion from electric to a rewind pull would probably be far, far more headache than just replacing the starter. Unless this is a really ancient Evinrude, that starter shouldn’t be too terribly difficult to repair/replace if necessary.

Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.

I replaced the starter($65) on a 1970 Johnson 20hp…easy to find and install. May want to check the starter solenoid($25) as well.

if you really want to go from electric to manual, you need to find a used blown up motor witht he parts you need and go that way, otherwise, you could buy a used motor for less money than buying all the new parts you will need.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I may just look into getting a new starter. Still not sure that is what the main issue is though, it seems like it is not getting enough juice from the battery. It sounds like a car trying to start with a dead battery. Also, the negative connection started to smoke some when trying to start the motor. The battery is fairly new, any ideas?

sounds like bad battery cables
use a set of jumper cables and connect them along with your current battery cables, and try it.

What chris says, but with jumper cables you can also bypass the starter solenoid and if that works than it is the solenoid. if not probably the starter.

Ended up being the battery cables, quick easy fix! Thanks for all of the replies!
