1- I’ve got a deep cycle battery hooked up to my 35 hp electric start Johnson and the motor does not seem to recharge the battery as it runs. This is my first electric start so I’m not too positive about if it’s supposed to recharge it like my truck or not. The battery gets drained after a day of starting and shutting the engine off repeatedly moving around spot to spot. Is this normal?
2- I also plan on hooking up a marine stereo with two speakers to the battery. Should I toss a switch in the line? Will having the stereo permanently hooked up drain the battery when not in use?
3- As for the recharge issue, would a solar panel recharger do the trick? if so, what should I look for? should it be hooked up permanently or just when I feel like it needs a charge?

sounds like your rectifier is bad
check battery voltage with motor off, then with motor on
motor off 12.3-12.7
motor on 12.5-13
approximately.
voltage should be higher with motor running.

exact thing was wrong w my johnson 50 (which is pretty close to yours)…i had to replace the reg/rectifier like chris v said. count on 150$ for the part unless u got a hook up. it did the trick, at least till i hit somethin full throttle out at folly and cracked my midsection and blew my gearcase
A deep cycle battery is not designed to start an engine.
A deep cycle will start a 35 without even breathing hard. It’ll do a Honda 225. My last one only lasted 5 years, though … [:0]

All Johnsons don’t have chargers. My 25 doesn’t. If you don’t have a manual, go to the library and check one out. You may also talk to marine shop and ask them if your model has a charger.
