Elliott Cut Challenge

It was such a beautiful day yesterday, I thought I’d do some yak ‘fishin’. Dorked around gazing aimlessly at some football games, losing track of time. By the time I got to the Cut (~3PM), the water was raging pretty good on the outgoing tide. However, being just shy of 50, I took the challenge and headed up the Cut. Took several rests, hugging the bank, dodging the usual breakers from small ships heading up river, but finally made the Stono.

Wind was fierce! Anchor would not hold. Drank half my thermos of coffee and gave up. Just too darn choppy, windy, and too much current. Anyway, it was a great workout.

Headed in, taking the outgoing tide sleigh ride back to the landing and spent the last day in the comfort of my living room. Next time!

despite the wind, i almost headed out yesterday. i don’t know if i was too lazy or came to my senses, but i’m glad i didn’t. i can only enjoy being tossed around by the wind so much.

Glad you didn’t go. It wasn’t “fun”. It was “stimulating”, in that fighting the current stimulated my heartrate to around 170 BPM.

BTW, anyone NOT experienced in kayaks should NOT go into the Cut in these fast moving water conditions. The current can spin you sideways, and if a large boat is passing, you could flip easily. Best to go on slack tide a few times first. Also, you have to be a strong paddler to stay in control and make any headway. Remember to wear your jacket at all times. Somebody could bump you. Wouldn’t be your fault, but the jacket would be your fortune.

I’ve done that before too! Instead head to the firehouse landing. Less paddling to the Stono, but can be just as violent. Also the reeds directly across from that landing does hold reds from time to time! I’ve pulled in in there as a last resort and pulled in slot reds. Incoming tide with cut or live bait was what I have always caught them on.

Agreed!

Fun place to sit and watch the idiots launching and loading boats though!

But there’s that pocket of rocks and eddies down close to the landing that was just freakin loaded with reds and flounder last year.

I use a more protected launch for fishing the Stono and only cross the cut when I want to see if there are flounder on the oyster mound.
