Email Hacked

My Yahoo email account has been hacked twice in the last 4 days. Prior to this I have never had a problem with Yahoo. I just got a smartphone a little over a week ago and have been accessing my email via my phone. I have to believe that this hacking is connected to my accessing email via my phone. I am not positive this is the case but it certainly is a coincidence. Can anyone shed some light on this? I will not be using my phone to retrieve email until I can figure out what is going on.

Google ‘Yahoo email breach.’ May not have anything to do with your phone.
I bet it is the breach and not the phone.

Might depend on how many of those Nigerian Prince money offers and Russian wife email offers you respond to…

Thanks palmerscott, I appreciate the input. Trying to get someone on the line at Yahoo. Bonzo and Peapod not so much but, not surprising, two peas in a pod. Pun intended.

Yep, it’s not your phone. It’s likely a combination of a security breach at Yahoo and … I’ll apologize for the accusation before I make it … a weak password.

99%* of people use terrible passwords for everything. Passwords should ideally contain mixed case letters, numbers, and symbols and should look very random. When dealing with passwords, dictionary words are generally a bad idea.

Better yet, switch to two-factor authentication. Doing so will allow you to use a simpler password, but you will have to have your phone available to log in from new computers and devices. Two-factor authentication uses a combination of a basic password and unique and random code that is generally sent to you via text message when you attempt to log in from an unknown device. It’s far more secure.

Below is a link to a somewhat recent list of popular services that offer two-factor authentication. Yahoo is included.

(* I made up that statistic, but I’m probably not far off…)

All my passwords are “Password12345”

Is that wrong?

Put a ! on the end and you are safe.

Never use the password ‘Sharted’ unless you are sure you will never have to give it out for some reason. It was very embarassing telling the nice older lady at Belk what our online password was for our wedding registry. I tried to just spell it for her in 1/2 letter increments…S…HA…R…TED. - this did not keep her from saying Sharted…Sharted…so its Sharted right -

Some good info and some kinda weird info but hey, that’s CF now isn’t it. Good article on passwords Capntang. I will definitely get more serious about all of my passwords. I did add that second layer of verification to my Yahoo mail yesterday so we’ll see what happens next.

Love the “sharted” story, funny movie.
