I have a 2006 Yamaha 50 HP 2 stroke. It is very clean with very low hours. The boat has set up since March due to a health issue. I was able to start it and run it smoothly for a few minutes every month.
Monday I started out for the jetties. It ran great for 30 minutes and died. I had to get towed in.
I can’t get it to stay running. I replaced the external fuel filter/water separator, and I replaced the spark plugs. It runs just a little better.
It starts and runs for a few seconds, and then when the fast idle cuts out it stalls. Holding the linkage at a fast idle does not help it stalls anyway.
If I flip the red emergency enrichment lever from Normal to open it runs like a champ. Does open make it run richer or leaner? I know I can’t run it with the switch in an emergency position. I have a shop manual, but I can’t find anything about enrichment adjustment.
i have the same motor and the auto choke stopped working last year. Flipped it to close position (i think) till it warms up the flip to open (i think) and runs great. Been doing it for a year. Going to get it fixed after season, maybe a diaphragm???
Thanks Chris. I’m wrong again! I thought that I was wrong to think the emergency enrichment had anything to do with the air fuel mixture. I thought that I had just figured out that they were talking about enriching the oil mixture into the fuel.
I remember when I could fine tune a car engine with a good ear an Allen wrench and a nail file. That was before they started filling the empty space under the hood with computer chips. I never owned an outboard in those days, bud I’ll bet it was a lot easier to figure them out also.
