Emotion Renegade Kayak

Does anyone have any experience with the Emotion Renegade kayak? I saw one on craig’s list and it was sold earlier that day. The information and review are good except that it is flat bottomed and may not track very well. The fact that it is 36’ wide and has the molded in handles on the sides appeals to me and even new ones are reasonably priced so if kayaking doesn’t work out I wouldn’t have a fortune in it.

I have an emotion mojo for my buddy kayak. It’s 12.5 ft. Long vs. the 10 ft. Renegade. I’ve never used it but everyone that has seems to be ok with it. I would certainy prefer a longer kayak than a 10’ for fishing around here. And, the width to length ratio seems bit extreme. Looks like it would be slow and akin to paddling a bathtub. I would certainy test paddle one before you buy. Emotion kyaks are decent mid-range boats. I’m jut not so sure about that particular design. But, you never know what works well for you until you put one in the water.

If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

The dimension ratio matches mine pretty close, short and wide. The reviews were favorable on the boat except that it was not fast and didn’t handle well in swift current. I would use it mostly just beyond the breakers where there’s a sandbar that keeps fish beyond casting range from the beach.

I’d rather fish than eat.

I have fished with JP in his mojo and absolutely loved it. He has customized it with recessed rod holder, but otherwise is standard. Nice light weight boat. I really don’t see a need to stand up, but certainly the guys hunting reds will disagree. I actually went with a peddle drive model because it is way cool to have hands-free, but have already run aground in the shallows. So I guess it is all relative. I am also a small guy, so thought the 12 ft was sufficient. But I usually trail behind the guys in the 14 footers.

Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

Taz, For going beyond the breakers there are better options out there. I would read the reviews from as may places as you can and definitely try one before you buy. Some of the reviews I read claim that the Renegade is “tippy”. Also keep in mind that it does not come with a seat pad, etc. If you add one you are going to be sitting higher and lose stability. Personally, I would look for a bigger boat for your intended use. You could probably pick up a quality used boat for a similar price. I highly recommend testing anything before you buy. Go see your local Kayak shop and look at all the options. If you are here in Charleston, the guys at “Time Out” are great. And, they have rental/demo kayaks for most of the models they sell. That way you know what you are getting before you plunk down your hard earned cash.

The 2012 XT model comes with a seat pad. The area we travel to in SW Florida has a place that rents fishing kayaks as well as boats and other beach equipment so I will probably rent one there unless I buy a used one before we go like the one I just missed on CL.
