Endangered Sea Bass

Could anyone tell me a logical explanation as to why sea bass are considered endangered? I literally can’t get out of them at the Nearshore reef! From what I’ve read on here it seems like the population offshore incredible too. What gives?

They’re not considered endangered- they’re experiencing overfishing as determined by federal assessment, and the season is therefore closed after reaching the ACL as dictated by the reauthorization of the Magnuson Stevens Act. Many folks strenuously object to the closure and have hyperbolized the terms regarding their abundance to bring attention to the issue.

federal assessment was nothing more than an unsubstantiated guess by a council that is hell bent to end commercial and recreational harvest of the most viable fishery off our coast. Until you remove the cancer that is on the board (David Cupka) there will never be a logical decision made. Right now they are planning to expand the MPA’s off of Charleston, and further restrict what you can harvest. I have fought against this council for many years and not once have they made a single decision that is in favor of the fisherman. With the price of fuel where it is, and has been, that has cut down the harvest of all saltwater species. The number of commercial and headboats has fallen to an all time low, again lowering what has been landed. They want you to think that they care about the fisherman…they don’t! Take a look at what Cupka makes annually, traveling to all the meetings in places like St. Simon Island, Amelia Island and the rest of the cities in the SE. The Council needs to be disbanded and there needs to be science based, real world numbersused to determine the viability of the fish stocks. The NMFS needs to work with fisherman, and listen to them, not take the word of an Enviro from the PEW foundation that “thinks” the stocks are overfished. We have tried to take their scientists out to do stock assessments on Red Snapper and were brushed off. Rob did a video of a dive on 1 rock in 120’ that showed hundreds of big snapper yet we have to go off of the best available data. Anyone that says Blackfish are overfished or undergoing overfishing are ignorant or blind. I commercially fished BSB’s from the late 80’s to just a few years ago, and we had never seen the numbers or the size that we

Amen, sellsfish!

You tell em sellsfish. I am getting to the point where my fur hackels up when I hear or read the word “federal”.
