Engine Knock

I have a 2000 Yammie OX 66. I have noticed this season a more prominent tap/knock. It disappears or at least becomes indistinguishable at higher rpms. Doesn’t seem to effect performance. I have been using 93 octance this season because I am only geting out once every month, and figure the gas left in the tank has lost some octane by the time I use it again. This is also the first season that I don’t top of the gas after each use, hoping that this will reduce the effects of the ethanol remaining in a less than frequently used boat. Every time out, I empty the racor, and get a cup full of H2O for every 20-25 gallons of gas. I plan on running ring free at the concentrated level the next time out, then changing the plugs which look to still be in good condition. Anybody have any other suggestions b/f taking it to the mechanic to see if the timing needs to be adjusted. Is this done by computer? If I wait till the end of season, is there a possibility of damaging the engine? Thanks

is it at idle when in gear?

there ain’t no shame in passin’ the rod

The knock is at idle (nuetral) and when in gear at low rpms.

Pre-detonation?

I’d get it adjusted. BTW, how are getting so much water? That sounds a little odd.

I have the exact same thing happening with a yamaha f150. The mechanic came out and looked at it and said it was “gear case chatter” which he said is pretty common as lower units start getting a lot of hours on them and the gears are not meshing perfectly at idle rpms. He claims that it is more common on counter rotating motors (which the one having the problem is). He also said that there is really nothing that can be done about it but not to worry that it will not result in any problems other than being annoying.

Any other opinions about this? Can it be fixed?

I had an OX66 225 hp that did it. It was called prop rattle by some. It can be more pronounced in the OX motor that drops out a couple of cylinders at idle (runs “rougher” by design). Mike at Skips said if I put a lighter weight aluminum prop on there it would go away. Something about the weight of the prop and the prop shaft just not keeping up with each other. NOTHING to be concerned with if that’s what you’re experiencing. That’s a great motor you have, don’t worry. I would maybe drain that tank though and start fresh if you’re getting that much water every 25 gallons.

What HP is the motor?

there ain’t no shame in passin’ the rod

strickland, it’s the 150. maybe I should go back to keeping the tank full?

a tap at low rpms with a ox66 is usually the O-2 sensor

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

Will running the shock treatment of ring free help clean the O2 sensor. Or, does it need to be disassembled to be properly cleaned. If I have to do the latter, is it worth just replacing with a new one. Thanks, Chris

New O2 sensors are not CHEAP! At least by my measure

Go here for plenty on O2 sensor and how to service on OX66
