My johnson 140 2 stroke is still overheating despite putting in a new water pump and thermostats. Any ideas? I have really strong flow coming from the pee hole but the water seems hotter than normal… I am baffled
SOUNDS KINDA LIKE POSSIBLE BLOCKAGE IN COOLING WATER PASSAGES , PEE HOLE FLOW WON’T NECESSARLY SHOW THAT…

gail wins nailed it again. I second that advice.
Pee hole is only a tell-tale that the pump is pumping…doesn’t indicate proper cooling flow through the block. I third the above advice…

Thanks i will check that out
FISHBOY; TRY PULLING THE T-STAT OUT AND DROP LOWER UNIT ; SET 5GAL BUCKET UNDER ENGINE TO CATCH ALL WATER COMMING OUT ;; WITH GARDEN HOSE PUSH AS MUCH WATER AS POSSIBLE INTO T-STAT PORT ; YOU SHOULD START GETTING SAND/SLUDGE/CRAP INTO BUCKET , IF SO CONTINUE UNTIL CLEAN THEN REASSEMBLE AND TEST RUN IN AREA LAKE OR RIVER WHILE PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO ENGINE TEMP… IF RUNNING CLOSE TO NORMAL OPERATING TEMP RUN FOR A WHILE AT HIGH SPEED TO HELP REMOVE ANY RESIDUAL CRAP… IF ABOVE FAILS TO REMEDY OVER HEAT YOU’LL MOST LIKELY NEED TO PULL HEAD AND WATER JACKET TO CLEAN IT ESPECIALLY IF THE PROBLEM IS STUCK/CAKED ON CORROSION…[:0][:0] NO GUARANTEES BUT IT WORKED FOR ME AFTER SUCKING UP SAND/MUD FROM A GROUNDING… HOPE THIS HELPS…

I had an old '96 Johnson 115 2 stroke that was overheating. I ran it on the muffs with the thermostats removed and could see that the cooling water barely even reached the T-stats. I shut the motor down and ran some Salt Away solution into the T-stat housing opening and just let it sit in there for an hour or so. Came back and started it up on the muffs again and the water starting tumbling out of the open T-Stat ports. After 20 years I guess the salt had just built up inside the cooling jacket. I repeated the procedure just to get more salt out and it sure flowed better.
I am now a believer in Salt-Away.
When I lived down in the Fl. Keys, my neighbor had a cooling problem on an old 115 Mercury. I watched hem put a large metal tub under the motor and he filled it with a concoction of vinegar, water and I think some muriatic acid he penched from my pool house. He ran the motor until the tub looked like it was steaming. Three or four hours later I went over and he showed me a large amount of what looked like fine white sand in the bottom of the tub. He later said it fixed his cooling problem.
