Motor is a 1999 90 HP Mercury Coasatl. Charged last years battery overnight and tried to crank the engine. Motor sounded like the battery barely had enough juice to turn it over, very weak sounding. Figured battery was bad so bought a new one. Hooked it up and same sound. Then examined the new battery and connections and noticed the positve wire was hot. Any ideas, bad starter maybe?
I start with checking where the cables attach to the motor. Then I’d start with the starter and solenoid. Also, how do the cable ends look at the battery?

bad battery cable?
use a set of jumper cables and bypass the cables and see if it will start
