EP-Fibers

Anyone have a good recommendation on storage of EP-Fibers? I just started tying with them and don’t want to screw up the fibers and make a big mess. It doesn’t exactly slide back into the bag it comes in easily. Right now it is just sitting on my desk.

Ideas I’ve already come up with - a bigger bag, still seems like they might turn into a big tangle - or - a zip-tie on one end of the product to at least bunch it all together.

Any tier out there got a better way?

I cut up one of the seams on the package about 1/3 the way up. I pull out what I need at the moment and slide the rest back in the bag when I’m done. It keeps things nice and neat. It also helps to take a barber’s comb to the stuff if it starts to get out of control or knots.
As far as storage, I use hanging file boxes (from office depot) for fur, feathers, flash, and any other materials I want to keep kink-free. The hanging files also keep oils from feathers and fur from bleeding colors onto other materials.

Try out the congo hair… it will save you a lot of $$ if you tie with a lot of EP-like material, and it’s a great product. I can’t help with a storage suggestion as my desk is the antithesis to organized storage…

Deadphish, thanks for those tips! I like the slitting the bag idea. It is funny how some fishing gear you have to figure out the best way to open the package correctly to get the product to work easily - another example - slowly opening and unwinding new tapered leaders. Also I used your comb technique on some old crystal flashaboo that was a mess and it worked great. Nice tip!

Jerms, thanks for the link to that site. I am definitely going to use some of their products. The Silk Hair sounds cool to work with too.

I took a class from Enrico several years ago and learned how to best remove some fibers without causing a big tangle. He showed us to use both hands to separate the amount you need and then work both hands down to the other end gradually separating the bunch. Don’t take the piece you need and pull it down to the other end like peeling a banana as it will cause more of a tangle. I know your question was about putting it back in the package but if it is not tangled it is not too hard to slide it back in.

Thats more good info thanks. I have already noticed what you are talking about.

Again nothing relating to bananas is good for fishing. Hah.
