No, when I checked the last time to replace mine, I got a new unit for like $50 more.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Mine has not expired yet but when it does I’m doing like Saltydog235, replacing the old with the new for just a little more cash.

You may want to give Ray Harvey a call over at Air-Sea Safety & Surival: http://www.airseasafety.net/index.html
They are a great, local service station located in downtown Charleston and are the only shop I know of in the area that are authorized by ACR to perform EPIRB battery replacements. No offense to the folks at Batteries Plus but I personally wouldn’t trust them with performing this service. There is a lot more involved than just pulling 4 screws and replacing the battery. An authorized service includes a full functional test, inspection for internal corrosion, and performance of a pressure test to ensure the unit is watertight. Like saltydog mentioned, you can often just by a new unit for a few dollars more than what the battery replacement costs. Last time I had the battery replaced in mine I believe it was right at $350. I recommend taking a look at the new ACR V4 (https://www.acrartex.com/products/catalog/epirbs-and-accessories/globalfix-v4/#sthash.3CKLT7D1.dpbs). These now have a 10-year lithium battery and are designed so the battery can be replaced by the user. If you shop around you should be able to find one for under $400. This is the route I’ll be going when my current EPIRB battery expires.
Just got off phone with Air/Sea and ordered the new ACR V-4.
$300 for battery replacement, $394 for brand new V-4.
Thanks All,

That’s pretty hard to argue with.

Sounds like you got a good deal! I think you’ll be happy dealing with Air-Sea- I know I have been. They sell other safety equipment as well like commercial grade flares, pfd’s, & liferafts for very competitive prices. The last time I was in there they I asked them if they had any old flares they were looking to get rid and they loaded me up with a bunch of commercial grade parachute flares that were still current but were set to expire within the next year for free. I keep them in my ditch bag separate from my boat flares.
