I have been looking at all the choices now available for GPS safety devices… only problem is, there are so many! I know the classic EPIRB has been used for years, but there are a lot of other choices out there now. Anyone have some insight on what may be the best? Or at least the best for the money? Paying $900 for an EPIRB and then paying $600 every 5 years just to have the batteries replaced seems somewhat silly to me when I can buy a “personal GPS system” (which is registered to a “person” instead of a boat) for half the price and just keep it on the boat… then again, there may be a big difference in the two items that I am just unaware of. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Some EPIRB activate when they are submerged. But plb and spot do not. I have a plb and spot. They both have to be manually activated. Spot goes through a emergency “call center”. Plb sends on the same frequency as epirb(at least I’m pretty sure).
Hope this helps

I have a 2nd edition spot. It is hohum. If you need to send ok updates, it is fine, if not, go with plb. My 2cents.
Here is some new technology that you may not be aware of. And just like SPOT, they chose to partner with the RED boats of TowBoat US for service! http://www.boatus.com/pressroom/release.asp?id=796
