Eventual Restoration

Hey All,

I read these forums quite a bit but rarely post. I’ve never owned a boat so I’m hoping you all might be able to help. My wife and I bought our first house a few months back and the seller threw in an old Robalo center console that I will be slooooowwwlly restoring over the next couple years. The tires on the trailer are dry-rotted and I think the wheels themselves are probably bad so my guess is he just didn’t want to mess with dragging it out of the yard—totally cool by me.

Million dollar question:

  • Is it possible for anyone to identify the model or year just by looking at the pictures? Haven’t received the title yet and there’s no hull id number that I can find so I have no idea just how old it is. Apparently hull id numbers weren’t required until after '72 but I can’t believe the boat is that old. Tried searching the registration number on the side that was last renewed in '98 but came up with nothing.

Any help will be much appreciated. Read all 9 pages of Phin’s Mojo Mako rebuild the other day and I can’t stop thinking about fixing this thing up now.

SCDNR should be able to ID boat based on registration. Don’t spend any $ until you have titles for boat and motor signed over to you. Without titles it will next to impossible to register in your name in SC. The hull may be a good one to restore but note the tansom appears to already have metal support added. Probably better off to go with a galv trailer already in good shape.

My guess is early 80s. The transom has had a lot of work and the hull ID numbers have probably been filled over and painted. Often they are duplicated again inside a bow locker on the starboard side.

You could also contact Robalo with a pic and they also have a large owner association that can identify it pretty close.
