Ever refinish a push pole?

Have an older polecat push pole and it is shedding tiny bits fiberglass and just curious if anyone has redone one before? Have any suggestions on type of urethane to use if a urethane at all? I figure I need to lightly sand, blow off dust with compressor and wipe down with alcohol to start… fill me in!

I’ve used U 40 Perma Gloss rod finish with great results.

Thanks for the info, I’ll look into that stuff shortly!

yes. i have a graphite g loomis push pole that was shedding. i sanded it with a da sander and wiped it down and sprayed it with rattle can bedliner paint. the paint is about $8 a can and it took me about 3 cans but it is going on 3 years and it is holing up really well. the texture is really nice and it doesnt get hot from the sun.

Stump, if you are wanting to just make it smoother, for an affordable price and reasonable effort, just use Spar varnish from Lowes. Should bond just fine to the fiberglass as long as you clean it up with some 320 grit sandpaper. Spar is very dark amber, so if this pole is white, it will look “yeller-brown”. I could give you an instruction list if you’d like, to do this well. Not hard at all, and probably fun for you. You could do this easily for around $15.

If you are trying to restore this to a high-gloss, the rod finish that Fishbowl suggested will probably do the trick just fine.

I was gonna do this method:

One suggestion if you follow those instructions… don’t do this [:0]

You can leave the mixed paint in the refrigerator in between coats or overnight before you spray again. The coolness of the fridge will keep the paint from catalyzing as fast

Your wife will probably kill or divorce you if you put a 2 part paint like Awlgrip in your refrigerator for even 10 minutes, much less overnight. You’d have to throw away all the food, maybe even the refrigerator. Use an old cooler with frozen jugs of water, outside

Sounds like something I would do without thinking…

I just refinished my pole. It is one of the 4 piece graphite / carbon poles originally sold by Temple Fork / Mangrove. Joe at carbon marine who sells them now instructed me on the process.

The original outer layer of the pole must have worn away because after using all day my palms would be stained black I guess from the raw carbon or graphite.

  1. lightly sand 200grain
  2. rubdown with alcohol
  3. paint with sponge brush Minwax fast dry POLY Flood coating.

The minwax was like 7bucks from lowes and put back a nice coating and shine on the pole. Pole look sbrand new for under 10bucks and 30 mins.

Larry, with all your knowledge from experience and the great stories told on here, how has your wife not killed or divorced you? You got a special lady!

I sure do. She has put up with me, sailed and boated with me halfway around the world, been wet, cold and miserable so many times I can’t count, cussed me out more times than I can count, but she has stood by me for 40 years. And always smiles when she is warm and dry and fed regular. One of the few good choices I ever made in this life

I hope you will. She is a full blooded Greek girl. Her name is Theodora, which in Greek means a gift from God. That’s exactly what she’s been to me.

As to that push pole, I’d sand it and roll it with a coat or 2 of epoxy tinted black with powdered graphite.
