Exceeding max HP rating on small boats

What is the law in SC regarding hp ratings?

One of the options I’m considering is one of the Old Town square stern canoes that is rated for a 4hp, but I’ve found that the 6hp is the same weight and basically only pennies more.

I can’t see a 2 horsepower increase causing this to be dangerous at all. The canoe is 44" wide in the center, 15’4" long.

Does SC care about such things?

from my understanding!, the legal hp limits will usually give you a bigger hp# than what manufacturers do. theres online calculators out there to guide you on what boats can actually handle, but not sure about canoes.

but as far as from a legal standpoint i dont think there would be an issue.

BUT!!! you WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES on the 4hp, the 6hp you will.

From what I understand there is no legal ramifications behind, I have heard that you cannot get an boat that is over powered insured though

I’m not sure if I’d insure it or not. The motor will be removed and locked up when not in use (a 60 pound motor is heavy but I’m still halfway young lol)

Now, the tax issue is a good point I had forgotten. 4hp it is. It seems to be the same motor anyhow (Tohatsu), according to websites I’ve read, they just limit the RPMs on the 4. Which is probably a good thing anyhow.

if thats true get the 4hp and then figure out a way to make it 6

you should be jailed for exceeding the hull rating by 2 hp and for being such a hazard on the waterway.

If they didn’t jail me for cutting the tags off my pillows and mattresses then I doubt they will jail me for this :sunglasses:

And exceeding the Fed’s newly implemented (and tax-able) Canoe Rated Application Power (aka CRAP) regulations. :sunglasses: I believe the Feds may have setup a new agency to administer and monitor this …

That particular piece of legislation also taxes you for the amount of water your hull displaces because of rising water levels and beach erosion.

And monitors the weight on Sullivans Island so it doesn’t tip over (or sink).

I had forgotten about that. I was planning on patenting and building island stabilizers out of reclaimed/recycled flip flops for such situations, but there are no used flip flops to be found, they are all still working in Washington DC.

And most of those used flips flops are mis-matched (and worn on the wrong foot).

I believe they started a new agency (and a super-fund) to collect, match, re-acclimate and re-distribute all used flip-flips in DC (along with free, personal training so they will be worn on the correct foot).
