excited... repower :)

well i got a killer deal on a 130hp 4stroke honda 130hp. its an 03 model year.

going to repower my proline… i didn’t think i would ever get a 4stroke and would be stuck in the 2smoke motor catagory for a long while.

i am super excited.

hear is my proline.

the dock is in my backyard. in georgetown.

Nice upgrade. I’ve only been on a few boats here with Hondas since Yammy is so popular but I’ve never had a problem with them. You will love the 4 stroke world. No oil, much better MPG, and no nasty smoke at idle and when starting. It’s just nice having a motor you can depend on and to me that is worth the initial cost since I go offshore frequently. I’m sure the same applies anytime you need to crank the motor.
Enjoy your new purchase. Looks like a great upgrade.

I’ve got a friend in south florida with a similar sized sea hunt with a 115 4 stroke on it and it tops out at 35mph and runs great all day at 5 to 6 MPG. You should be in even better shape with the 130.

Hey, i like how my ole merc smokes. I kill bugs at the same time! Who needs a thermacell when you’ve got a 2-stroke

14’ Skiff-“Redfish Reaper”

only worry i have is the weight.

the bf130
Dry Weight (L-type)

225 kg/496 lbs.

Dry Weight (X-type)

229 kg/505 lbs.

the black max
150 2 L 404 lb

i actually think the bf130 will out perform the black max on top speed and hole shot. the 130 is a 2.2l where the 150 is a 2.0l will be tough my best day wot with the black max was 42iirc on the gps/sog that was on the river on like glass water… my best in the bay was 39.8 inl ight chop. both were on the same day…

i know i am picking up fuel economy and the quietness… i also love the honda alarm features and the fact it will shut the motor down before you can do damage.
after new plugs, oilchange, fuel filters, foot oil we used a mobile tank with non ethonal+seafoam and hit the motor off. the alarm and low oil light sounded shut it down… was 1qt low. put 5 in motor takes 5.9 was nice to hear the alarm.

I have a Honda 130 on my '02 mako 1901. It’s not a speed demon. I’ll top out just over 40 on the GPS.
I do want to move it up a hole or two to get the lower unit out of the water more. I’m in the second hole from the top.

To compare, I had an early 70’s mako 22. It was a flatter bottom hull than my current mako. And much heavier. I had a 2.0L Merc Xr4
on it. It’ topped about the same speed as the current mako. Just over 40. Granted, that was a few years ago and not on the GPS.
I also had a hydraulic jack plate on the 22.

Either way, the quiet is so much nicer. And the savings on fuel and oil.

You can always move the batteries further forward to compensate for the weight. Unless they’re already under the console. Mine were moved from the back by the transom to the console.

the excitment is starting to wear off.

after all the fluid changes new plugs and cleaning of the iacv .

i can get it to start with a rough idle. it does require 1/4 throttle. now the green warning light comes on and will buzz…
after running for 10 seconds it will shut down… now even after an hour of sitting as soon as i turn the key to on position the buzzer goes off without starting.

one new plug has some carbon on it from 10 seconds of running.

according to the gauges the motor has 450hrs on it.

my next step would be to pull the map sensor and other intake related sensors and start cleaning them… possibly pull the oil pressure sensor and water temp sensor see if how they look.

yes i am trying to get it running before i swap over to the proline. motor is quite clean tho inside.

the Honda isn’t going to perform nearly as well as the merc
the merc is 100pounds lighter, its a v-6 instead of an inline 4, and its a 4 stroke
however, it wont burn oil, it wont smoke, and it will burn less than half of the fuel, and it will be so quiet, if you aren’t careful, you will try to start it, while its already running.

now, lets look at your runability issue
start from scratch, so you don’t have to back track later
do a compression test(doesn’t matter what compression was a week or a year ago, you weren’t having issue then)
then do a spark check
then check fuel pressure

once those are all confirmed good, you can start looking for sensor issues

called jimmy’s marine in ocean isle nc. they do the coast guard and dnr honda outboards. hoping to pallet it up and get it up their soon.

i pulled motor and put it on stand so i could store boat and get motor indoors.

called honda marine incorp to get the block serial numbers my block was not part of the bf130a recall(cracked block) so i am a bit happier with that news. we checked my head and block for replacment with oem numbers. the tech was quite helpfull and optimistic on condition.

got a new key switch/warning buzzer pannel+the check engine pannel and harness. got a deal on the harness for 5 faria gauges. i do plan on ordering new gauges for the boat.

the bayliner tropy cleaned up really nice and will be up for sale soon. i am thinking 3g with trailer.

if you need anything, let us know, we are a Honda dealer and a Honda certified tech.

also, be VERY careful with that motor on that stand, the motor is on the stand backwards and will easily tip over

its the only way we can fit it in the corner of the garage… the motor stand go in a corner and the back lower peice goes in the foundation. i know its on wrong but its how we have to do it… we keep a boat in the garage as well.

i called 3/4 service centers off honda service. and 1 that was not. only 2 felt confident in working on the hondas of that year. the other 2 kinda turned me away(which im not mad about) glad they wernt trying to garb the business and cut their teeth on my motor/bill.

i was actually given the number/name by a coastie and dnr agent. said its where they take their motors when need be.

if something changed with the timeline on when they can get it ill keep you guys in mind.

appreciate the help chris…

I have done this a few times, one time in the canal pulling away from the dock 3 times in a row. :face_with_head_bandage:
“Great, why does the starter keep making that noise … oh.”
Love my Honda.

should be fishing next week.

Do you have a water sensor under cowling ? On my yamaha vmax hpdi there is a small fuel reservoir with an H2O sensor in it. I had about 10 drops of water in there that had gotten through my fuel/water separator and was causing the exact issues you describe. I dumped the tank and squeezed the primer bulb a few times and was on my way. I changed the fuel/ water separator filter too. I’m doing it 2-3 times a year now just to be safe.

BKW

their is some type of vapor separator on the honda i am not 100% sure its location off the top of my head. i do have the service manual.

their is also 2 fuel pumps, and 2 types of filters. one is pre high pressure one post.

i pulled the one pre high pressure and did a bypass just to make sure it had fresh fuel. i ordered a new one of those waiting for it to arrive. i have found the 2 other filters but have not ordered them yet. one is a push lock style iirc it is black and is called HONDA OUTBOARD FUEL FILTER VAPOR SEPERATOR the other is fuel pump filter.

the part number for the black vapor.16010-ST5-933
the part number for pre pump(clear bowl) 16900-SR3-004
the part number for the long pump filter 16911-759-003
