Expired flares

What’s the best way to dispose of old flares?

Forth of July is in 2 days! Probably not the best choice, but we use to burn the sticks in the fire pit and shoot the flare shells on July 4th. Most responsible way is to contact your local fire department or the coast guard, they should be able to direct you. Interesting note, a very large percentage of the expired 12ga. Flares that we use to fire off were full or partial duds. Don’t know if it is by design or not, but there is truth to the expiry date.

We’ve done both…given them to the fire dept. and also used them to start a brush pile on fire. The fire dept was happy to get them.

I have never found a dud! Shoot them off every 4th.

Easy for the expiration dates on flares to sneak up on you. Same with fire extinguisher pressure valves reading low.

I always keep fresh dated flares with gun but I also put older outdated ones in a wp-bag and keep on boat… Can’t tell when they MAY come in handy !!![:0]

I have about 10 expired ones. Realized it just before heading on a trip so had to buy a new pack. My understanding is that as long as you have current flares aboard, you can have expired ones onboard as well. Wouldn’t mind firing off one or two for the 4th. Do they burn out before they hit the ground? Wouldn’t want to start a fire.
