Looking at buying a boat. Owner (friend) is letting me pick it up for a test run.
Catch is, the registration expired last year and he hasn’t renewed.
In your opinion…do I need to have him go through the whole process of renewing before sea trial, or would an officer likely be understanding if I go for a quick run at the ramp with it? If I buy it, I’ll be renewing anyhow.
well depends on the ossifer. the boat is supposed to have registration on the boat. if the engine has not been run in awhile and had not “winterized” be careful and run the hell out of it then get it inspected by some one reputable. i had one that blew a cylinder as the engine had (i think) rusted rings.
Also if “YOU” purchase the boat from him, MAKE SURE, all the taxes are paid in full before you buy it. When i bought mine They gave me a registration and all, when it came time for me to renew they said i couldn’t, come to find out the years before i owned the boat, the person did not pay the taxes, so i ended up driving to lexington county to pay .
you will have to pay taxes and fees as firemedic mentioned. also, I got a ticket for a registration that had expired by a few days when I sold my mako. even showed the officer the bill of sale and copy of the check. We were pulling away with the boat on the trailer after the seatrial and he got us. I think it was abotu $115 ticket. i had not renewed b.c i had already bought a new boat and didn’t have any plans to keep the mako and knew i had the boat pretty much sold a couple of weeks before the reg expired. Guess it depend son the officer but i woudl plan on getting a ticket if they catch you. however, if you are a SC resident and have a bill of sale made up before the test drive and fill out the registration forms needed to regiter it with the temp card you have 60 days that you can use the boat with the expired reg sticker
not sure about there but VA has a temp. regs that you can pick up anywhere fishing licnses are sold they give you 7 days call DNR and they will tell you what you need
Like Jeffro said, you have 60 days from the date on the bill of sale. The test run issue would be up to the officer. I would take any visible fishing supplies off the boat. Having fishing poles with you on a test run would be questionable.
