Extending MTP Pier will damage Fishing Resource

One of our writers, Jiggin Jerry, wrote about the Destruction of the Mt Pleasant Pier last June, it looked like Mt Pleasant town council, a couple of weeks ago, voted down the expansion of the pier. However, in a twist of events the council had a second vote and now its apparently going to be built.

The mayor of Mt Pleasant, Mr. Haynie, voted against extending the pier on the second vote, because as he put it: “I question this whole thing,” He noted that most of the funding for the pier extension comes from a tax increment financing district set up by the town, which diverted property taxes from the Charleston County School District and Charleston County town projects. Mayor Haynie said that if it were up to him, he’d give the money back “because this is not what TIF funds were meant to be spent on.”

Being a local magazine we only take sides when its about protecting the environment and our local fishing resource, we believe this pier expansion will damage the environment around the pier and the local fishing resource, if you haven’t read the original article the link is here https://coastalanglermag.com/the-destruction-of-the-mt-pleasant-pier/

The developers are going to get what they want, $$ talks. I bet it will just be a matter of time before they do dredge it as well.

Sounds like some members on the council filled up their pockets, or now have some promises coming their way.

Maybe I’m just late to the party but why does it need to be extended? Admittedly, I’ve never fished from the pier. I’ve fished by it from a boat, but never from it and I’ve never seen it full of fisherman. At least not “full” to the point there wasn’t anywhere for people to fish.

So a pier was built and that allowed for better fishing. But by extending the pier, the fishing is going to be devastated? I’m not quite sure I am following the logic in this one. I know personally that the Mount Pleasant Fire and Mount Pleasant Police boats will both be at the new extension allowing for faster on water response times for emergencies. I don’t see the issue with then new pier extension and for emergency responses, it will be drastically improve response compared to the Fire boat being at Charleston Harbor Marina and the Police boat being trailered.

Jigging Jerry needs to go dance with the manatees- nothing wrong with the pier plan- it greatly expands the linear footage of fishing pier and gives much different water access to anglers.

The article starts off real “feel-goodie”, using all kinds of adjectives to describe the pier “wind blowing against our hair, sunlight tanning our skin”, “smiles on others faces”, etc…

Then - OH then - it gets super “non-feel-goodie”…

The article talks about the “devastation” like a “roto-tiller through a flower garden” (describing the mudflat) and a “manatee with propwash scars”.

Sounds like many other articles I’ve read - primarily by liberals. Please, oh please, tug on my heart strings just a little bit more…
