F-150 shift adjustments

I have a problem with my shifter not wanting to go into reverse. When I adjust the linkage at the engine a small amount; it will go into reverse but will not go into forward. Is there an adjustment in the control box on the console? If so, can you tell me how to disassemble it to make the adjustment? I do see a screw under a rubber cover on the rear of the control but assumed it was for tension.

That screw is for throttle tension. The adjustment is in the cable itself. It has a lock nut on it, when you loosen it you can make the cable longer or shorter by screwing it in and out.

I’m thinking you have some “slop” or “looseness” in the linkage rod that goes down into the lower unit.
Not likely the cable adjustment if you make a minor adjustment and it messes up going into forward.
I had a similar issue on a JohnRude once and found some looseness on the linkage rod where it connects to another joint. Tightened that up and no more problems.

Thank you sir. It wasn’t the linkage rod but you spurred me to look hard in the right place. The shift cable guide at the top of the rod had 2 barely loose screws. Needed a ratchet with two extensions and a knuckle to get to them but all is well now.
