wrong! not all oils are created equal.

Run synthetic Yamalube or Amsoil and your engine will perform better. The technical details are here.

I do agree that even with synthetic oils, the marine environment is harsh and even synthetic oil MUST be changed as recommended by your service manual. However, the synthetic oil will encourage less wear on the critical engine components they were designed to protect. Provided that your engine isn’t already “worn”, you may also enjoy slightly greater fuel economy and horsepower.

If you change your oil and filter at the recommended intervals there is no need for synthetic oils. And unless Yamaha oil has improved it didn’t used to test well at all. I have a 2003 Yamaha F-150 with 2000 hours on it. All that has ever been in it is Castrol GTX or West Marine Brand, changed every 100 hours. Of course it wouldn’t hurt to use expensive oil, but I don’t think you’re benefiting from it.

Call any reputable shop and ask them. They will say synthetic is fine but they don’t recommend it. Now synthetic gear oil, that’s a different animal. Any good shop will recommend synthetic gear oil.
