F150 Yamaha shaft seal

My prop shaft seal is leaking on my F 150 Yamaha. Looks like a simple job to replace the inner and outer seals EXCEPT for pulling the bearing carrier. Yamaha makes a slide hammer for this job. It is pricey and takes a while to get. Does anyone have one I can borrow or rent? Does anyone have a home made method for pulling the carrier?

Thanks in advance!

that slide hammer is what is refered to as a school tool, it only works on motors that have been taken apart and put back together numerous times without getting wet, let alone salt water. It usually takes lots of heat and a carrier puller to get one apart. Do yourself a favor and carry it to a shop to have it done

I’ve used this method on two motors and it worked great while saving money on tools I would probably never need again. I have also seen it go TERRIBLY wrong because of people being careless. You just have to be VERY CAREFUL doing this method. Hope it helps.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO GET THE SLIDE HAMMER TO WORK
THERE IS A SPECIAL BEARING CARRIER TOOL THAT DOES WORK

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

Thank all ya,ll very much. I noticed the leak as I was parking the boat in it,s hiding hole for the storm. I crawled under the stern with a flash light and wiped some grease on my hands and felt very bad, storm coming and my boat has a PITA leak to fix as soon as I can get it back home. Well it turns the leak was not the shaft seal at all. It was that little drain plug for the lower unit grease. Never seen one of those leak before. I drained and refilled with new grease and NEW plug gaskets. Thanks again, the boat is back home and back on the lift.
