Fall fishing in Boone NC

The family is getting a cabin for Thanksgiving from WEds to Sunday and I’m bringing the 3 and 5 wts with me. any suggestions on what flies to throw and where to go? I hope to have a vehicle to mosey around a bit and hit up a fly shop or three. Any good shops around I must hit?

watauga holds some big trouts, seen 'em and couldn’t fool 'em. the toe river is nearby- tons of low-pressure water to choose from in various sizes.

little offshoots and feeder creeks all hold little brookies-- my fave. tight quarters in the rhododendron for the fly rod but bring an ultralight for those tiny places.

great tackle store on 105 heading west out of town-- called Foscoe outfitters.

I will be up that way as well, although I won’t have time to fish. :frowning: I went to college at App. and used to fish all the time up there. I would suggest going to appalachian angler on shulls mill rd. That was always my first stop before heading out. The watauga river is the easiest place to fish and can hold a lot of trout. The new river is good as well, although a little farther away. If you are looking for a small stream, try Howards Creek. There are a lot of pull offs on Howards Creek Rd. where you can drop in and wade a while. I used to do well with wooly buggers, and bead head nymphs. It has been a while but would probably still produce. Good luck and hope you catch em up.

I also forgot to mention that if the warm weather continues they may hit some topwater. I have never gone wrong with an elk hair caddis. Good luck

Very cool. Gotta go get the 3 wt spooled up tomorrow and pick up some more flies.

Got back at 4:30 last night and I got skunked while I was up there. It was too windy and to many branches and trees around to get many good casts in. I stopped at both Foscoe Fishing Supplies and Appalachian Angler. The dude working at AA said he had lived on Sullivan’s Island for a while so he was familiar with spottail and sea trout.

I’ve got a 10 day NC license that doesn’t expire till next Sunday, who wants to go to NC?

Green River and tributaries off it near Saluda are fishing well. Caught a nice 13 inch brown trout up there two weeks ago. Plenty of good spots right off the road if you have a pair of waders. I was fishing a prince nymph pattern. There’s a great little fly shop right in town called curtis wright outfitters. They’ll set you straight. PM me and I can give you some more specific places on the river as well.

Try the Chattooga DH I hear it’s on fire right now. They’re getting both numbers and size. Another place you might try is the Cherokee Indian Reservation. They have a trophy trout stream on the reservation that is supposed to be pretty spectacular.
