With the nice weather all week, I couldn’t resist getting up early and hitting the Wando - 63F, no wind, no bugs (?), and lots of fish!
Started with top-water along the grass line between Foster and Rathall Creeks. Got the boat right at the grass line and moved with the tide, working the lure parallel to the grass and with the tide (and the movement of bait schools). Best bite was near either structure or creek mouths. Usually one side of a creek mouth is better than the other but its not always the down-tide side, really depends on where the bait hangs out which is often the shallow side. Bite was consistent for a couple of hours, every couple of casts I would get a blow-up or a fish.
Noticed this Bald Eagle by the mouth of Rathall creek on my way out. Its a terrible photo but he was helping himself to some of the mullet.
Switched to the trout trick later in the morning and working some docks on Hobcaw Creek. Surprised myself by catching a nice red along a bank with the trout trick. The red busted on some bait, so I tossed the trout trick right at the spot where he was. When I went to “jerk” the bait the first time the red was already halfway to the boat! Also caught maybe a dozen more trout with the trout trick. They were biting the jig on the way down and while I was moving it, again a pretty consistent bite. First time I used the trout trick for more than a few casts. I went through a bunch of them as the tails were bit off frequently.
Great morning on the water! I need to skip work more often.
