I sure wish I could’ve been on the water at daylight this morning!!! I love this weather, the stripes are heating up!
2 reports I got this morning were zero’s. But they were looking for schooling. Wind was really bad this morning. A true gulf of murray…lol…
But I am with you. Sat in the garage last night enjoying the air temp cutting all my downrod rigs off and rigging all rods for boards and freelines…alot of people will fish downrods for another month…not me…ha

I pulled two freelines last night and my only hits came down at 30’. I did see one of the biggest gar I’ve ever seen roll right beside the boat. Might have been Messy

On a bright not the bait lived wherever I put it. I hate having to change bait every 2 minutes. No time to even enjoy a beer.

Man I have never heard of messie…ha…I read the article and they had me convinced until they said the lake was 380’ deep…blahahab

Greenwood doesn’t get quite as choppy as Murray. No way I would be out on the big part of Murray in my little boat.
Try it in a kayak! Steelytom’s right, Monday was tough in Beaverdam. If I don’t make it to the coast, I might try Hollywood Pt, if the wind cooperates a bit.

JC,
This time of year the fish can be anywhere any given day. Beaverdam is a great place this time of year before they move up. But with the forecast they may be up in the rivers by the weekend.

I know right? It’s interesting that 380’ is exactly twice the depth of what most folks have found the deepest part of Murray to be: 190’.
Maybe they doubled the size of “Messie” in their recounts as well!
Me and my friend, Mitchell, did catch a 6’ gar on Murray one evening while slow trolling/drift fishing with herring . Something had been picking our bobbered transom freeline clean all day (or cutting it in half and leaving just the head), until Mitchell decided he was just going to open the bail and let him pull the float under and wait about 20 seconds before setting the hook. Well he set the hook alright! Straight through the tail. It fought like hell for a long time until he got it beside the boat and I leaned over with the net and a lantern to see that giant toothy grin. He turned and asked if I wanted it IN the boat, to which I replied “Heck no!” (or something more colorful) so he pulled it parallel to my boat and we marked the gunwale , cut the line, and measured the gunwale later with a tape measure. It was an honest 6 footer.
The 300’+ numbers come from people that confuse the depth of the lake with the lake level reading.
The deepest water you can find now is probably 190’, but the lake level is 356’ above sea level. I remember seeing maps years ago that showed all the depths in feet above sea level so you had to subtract the numbers shown from 360 to get an idea of the actual depth.

Chip,
The lake used to be 380’ deep. Back in 1962 Messy and Mothra had a battle and all the rubble filled in the lake. It’s true, I read it on the interweb.

Steelytom, how long do you suppose the gar you saw was?
I was doing a little research and the record SC longnose gar was taken from Murray in 2008- bowfishing. It was 25 lbs and some change but it didn’t list a length. So I looked at other state records and none of them had a gar within a foot of 6 foot. Really makes me question if my buddy might have had a state record- which up to this point I never even considered there even WAS a state record for gar!
Not that our measuring was dead nuts accurate or anything, but it does make me wonder…
Steelytom,
If you get out please keep us posted. I may try to get out Friday, the forecast for the coast stinks, so I may be staying with the kayak. It looks right now like the wind will be 7-9 out of the NE (I think that’s what it was Monday), so Beaverdam may be chop and whitecaps again. I may need to be looking on the north side of the lake.
If nothing else, I might be staying close to home on Lake Wylie (latests catches are aggressive cats!). Yuck.
