Looking for some advice on what to wear to stay dry and relatively warm while kayak fishing in the fall and winter. I’ve found that I stay pretty wet in my kayak while fishing, be it from the paddle, bait bucket, seat scuppers, etc.
I’ve contemplated buying a good pair of neoprene waders to wear in the colder months to stay dry. I know the old loose rubber type of waders would be very dangerous to wear. Any recommendations?
Always prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I dress like I might be getting wet. I also bring a towel and a set of dry clothes just in case. I will wade some in the winter but for the most part I fish out of the yak. I have fished some of the coldest days of the year with the best success.

I get out a good bit during the winter. Here is what I wear (I’m not a fan of waders):
Base Layer of Capilene/Poly Pro/ other sort of wicking, quick dry long underwear
Top layer of nylon, quick drying pants and similar shirt (Columbia, Patagonia, etc).
If it’s really cold, I’ll wear a light fleece top and fleece pants.
On top of everything, I wear a pair of waterproof paddling pants, and a top if it is really nasty out. A pair of rain pants and jacket would work, but the stuff made for paddling really works well.
Gloves are great on cold days. I like some of the products from glacier glove (they made some for shimano at one point too). Gloves with thumbs and fingers that can pull back are great.
For footwear, I like a thick pair of wool socks inside a pair of high top neoprene “muk-luks”.
Don’t forget a hat!
Once the water cools down, in addition to my normal safety gear, I have another dry bag in the boat with dry base layer, dry fleece and jackets, socks, hat, etc. I have had to use this before when one of my buddies joined the Copahee swim team during a COLD january day!
