my gf and i went to fat hen for her birthday supper. the meal was excellent. here is the short of it -
for apps - she had bacon wrapped bbq scallops and i had sauteed stuffed oysters with county ham. both were perfectly cooked and excellent
entrees were - she had sauteed shrimp and lump crab meat, and i had a braised lamb shank. i cant exactly recall what each was accompanied with, but all the accouterments were fantastic. the portions were so huge neither of us could come close to finishing them. its not often you leave shrimp and crabmeat on a plate b/c you cant finish it all. we enjoyed and excellent bottle of cab (that the server recommended).
as far as “the tab” - to say the least, its not downtown prices, but it sure is downtown food
One of the best braised beef short ribs I’ve ever eaten! Also tried the shrimp and grits, very good. My gf and I went after Church one day. They have a Mimosa special, $12 all you can drink! I don’t drink Mimosas but It was fun to see her with an after church buzz.
i hate to say it with so many great dishes to choose from, but next time i go, i may get a burger. i saw a number of them coming out and they looked way good
They have a great thing going over there, thats for sure! I just hope they keep it up. There was a great place in Columbia called Frans that served some great comfort food, as they grew in popularity the portions shrunk.
Hoppy you are dead on with that order, I remember the bran muffins were really good. I lived about 10 min’s from Frans and loved it. So if you frequented Frans you probably liked the Thicket as well.
My usual at Lizards Thicket,
Fried Catfish
Stewed apples
Fried okra
Green beans or sometimes mac and cheese
My wife has been to Fat Hen multiple times with the girls from her work. She has always said that it’s great. Maybe one day I’ll be good enough for her to take me.
Hopster, I’m not sure if you’re a big fan of Italian food, but there’s a new joint on Johns Island that’s owned by the same people - it’s called the Wild Olive and I’ve heard it’s good eats, too.
