Fat Trout

Caught this one on jetties. She hit a 4" Bass Assassin plastic…Color Chicken on a Chain. 1/4 oz jig head. She was 25.75" long and the fattest trout I’ve ever caught.

Harold you should list the hot baits down there that are lesser known. Ive heard the matrix minnow is good. Also was that trout male or female. The big males are rarer but have a lot more back to them then the females. At first glance i thought it was a whiting.

Cory, it was a female and full of eggs. Among the guides down there, the bait of choice is live shrimp under a cork…by far! I think one reason is that it doesn’t take much talent to throw a spinning rod with a cork and a live shrimp…and then wait for something to eat it. I much prefer artificial baits…like plastics on jigs, especially when wading. If I’m in my boat, I like top water plugs (Top Dogs), but when wading I don’t want to be waist deep in water trying to get two sets of treble hooks out of the fish and the fish onto my stringer without hooking myself. I’ve found some saltwater suspending jerk baits, which have two single hooks rather than two treble hooks. I caught a 6+ lb. trout on it last month. Spoons are nice when trying to cover a lot of water with long casts to locate the fish. Once located, I go back to plastics or plugs. I have a couple of buddies who fish mainly for BIG trout, and they use live croakers.
You didn’t ask, but for line, I use a 30 lb. braid with a 20 lb. fluorocarbon leader. That way, when I hook a big bull red or a jack Crevalle, I can just hold the spool, pop him off at the leader, and get back to trout fishing.

Stonoman

That is a nice trout. Glad I read the full report, I was thinking about hitting the jetties after the storm.
