I had Tuesday off of work, so I asked my daughter what she wanted to do. And to my surprise she said she wanted to go to the lake! She is 4 and soon to be 5 and well behaved, so I’m comfortable taking her by myself. We decided to make an afternoon of it and do some swimming and fishing.
We put in at the dam around 12:30 after a McDonalds lunch and ran up to spence and swam for a long time. She’s part fish and loves to be in the water. With the wonderful temperature and low humidity it was shaping up to be an awesome day!
I finally convinced her to let me do some fishing and off we went in search of fish. I could tell she was getting bored quickly, so I decided to make the run to the towers so I could get in some fishing before she got too bored. We moved all around the towers marking fish the whole time, but no takers. Was fishing 40-60’ and marking fish everywhere. Nada… She says “Daddy, I want to go swimming again.”
OK, lets go. We head back over to spence and anchor up in the cove between two of the islands and had a ball jumping off the boat and swimming all around the boat in her life jacket. Finally, she tells me “Daddy, I want to go fishing.” OK! we can do that.
We rode around for what seemed like forever trying to find some fish. I still am not too familiar with the lake up there yet, so was struggling a little. I decided to try the towers again. As soon as I pull up there are fish everywhere. I look down and my little fishing partner is asleep!.. I layed her down on the bench seat and let her nap while I set out lines. I went back to fishing 40-60’ again, but nothing, not even a nibble. Some guys next to us in a 21’ mako were wearing them out, and I guess he felt sorry for me, so he asked me how deep I was fishing. I told him and he said they were only dropping 20’. I pulled up and rebaited and dropped them at 20’ and in just a few minutes I had a fish on.
I woke my daughter up and she helped me get the net and we pulled in the fish. In the next 45 minutes, we put three more
