Fatty!

Hi guys,
I don’t think I have ever posted in this section. I’ve never fished for striper in the lakes, but riverene striper are one of my favorite fish to target and catch. I catch them in the 3 rivers around charleston.

Anyway, check out this one I got yesterday. I’d love to see what was in it’s belly [:0]

It was 24" and went 7 pounds! What a football.

I fin-clipped it for SCDNR and released it.

It’s probably on the small side for what y’all are used to, but it was quite a thrill for me.

I am probably 99% sure u would be shocked at how little would be in its stomach. I would bet the house on it that its a male and those bulges are sperm sacs. Late feb-march these fish tend to look like that. Females will feel heavier (eggs) males will look fatter.

Nice fish for Charleston by the way.

Man, nice fish. Have caught a few stripers around Edisto but never one that size! Have had my cooler look like vinalla milk shake after a day of spring fishing sometimes deep enough to cover the fish on the bottom.Good luck on the costal stripers, always wanted to target the spring run up the Edisto but never had time. What was it caught on and how far from salt line?

Nice fish! Hit a Trout Eye??

@boatpoor - I catch them in the upper reaches of the Ashley, Cooper and Wando invariably in brackish water. Except for fall, they are more of an incidental catch than a target. I find them very hard to pattern. I think they move around a lot. In the Fall, they are easier to pattern, as they ball up the remaining bait in the creeks and blitz them :stuck_out_tongue:

@striper - Yes, it was caught on a gold TroutEye with a Gulp sapphire shine jerk shad. See below. Have you caught some on the jigs?

That’s a nice looking river fish! The stripers on Murray are super fat now due to being loaded with reproductive matter. I kept 3 stripers of 24+ inches, 26 inches, and 29 inches Saturday. I estimate they weighed around 6, 8, and 10 pounds respectively. I also jerked a dozen perch for my father. I gave him those fillets and the belly meat off the stripers. The 6 remaining striper shoulders were more than enough for my family of 4-- even with my 16 year old “hoss” of a high school football center:)

I have caught redfish and trout on them, but haven’t really used them striper fishing. I have caught stripers on gulp jerk shad, but with a weighted hook. I’ll give it a try with the TE jig head this spring.

Thanks everyone -
I’ve caught a bunch of river striper but only up to 26". I’m patiently waiting for the day I hook into a brute. That will be a special day for me. Striper have become one of my favorite fish to catch. Nothing beats a topwater strike by a striper in the fall. I can’t get enough

You should go up to Moultrie, there are some big ones there. They have to be 26" to keep.

Lake Russell for the big ones. Not uncommon to find fish over 40#.
