Would like to know your favorite for both a spinning reel and for a baitcaster. I used to think that mono was mono, but I was using one of my brother’s baitcaster rigs a few weeks ago and the mono he had on there (which he said was no longer available…don’t remember what it was) was the smoothest casting stuff I’ve ever used. He said it was “just plain mono”, but then again, he’s just the 2nd smartest child that my parents had.
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
My preference is stren. The most important thing on the lighter line is to change it out frequently. I change line on my smaller reels like every 2-3 months. The biggest problem with my spinning reels is the coils that develop in the line. The biggest problem with my baitcasters is someone backlashing the spool beyond recovery (happens all the time).
I think fresh line is the key. Stren, Berkley, and even Ande are all good. The newer the better.
I’ll second Dorado. Stren preferably. Then Berkeley. Never really used Ande. Buy it in 1/4# spools so you can change when needed. I generally respool twice a year as I typically don’t fish a lot but I’ve managed three nice reds in the past week or two which have trashed my 15# stren so I’ll be respooling soon.
I like Momoi (the blueish stuff). Seems to last as long as I need it and is quite limp for casting.

When it comes to mono you can’t go wrong with Trilene Big Game or Stren. Buy the bulk spool, it’s cheaper to respool when you need to.
As for mono on spinning reels, I’ve stopped doing that due to twist. Put a backer of mono on the spool, then fill it with braid. If you’re worried about the braid being visible, tie on a mono (or fluoro) leader to the end. It’ll make your life easier.
I’ve used Ande premium mono in 10, 12, 20 lb and both Ande and Suffix 40 lb for the past few years in Florida and have no complaints about either in any line class. They seem consistent and work well for me.
I just put some stren magnaflex on a spinning reel and couldnt be happier. Its 10 lb and I caught a 4 ft shark on it yesterday, even after several nice long runs in a 15 minute pulling contest it didnt fail. The 20lb mono leader I had on did fail however right at boatside while I was trying to figure out how to get him in the boat. Downfall of fishing alone I guess
To a degree this is true, especially if you just sling big bait and aren’t looking for lure presentation or worried about long casting distances.
However, you will seen a rather shocking difference in the flexibility (limp vs. stiff) between two lines. The cheaper lines tend to be rather stiff with lots of memory, just like the “tough” lines like Trilene Big Game. This makes for frustrating casting on both spinning and baitcasting. One of the WORST days of fishing I’ve ever had was immediately after spooling up with Stren’s Super Tough… it came unspooled from my spinning rod so badly that I had to remove almost half of it while fishing. I ended up tossing it all and respooled the next week with standard Trilene XL and it casted just fine.
But if you put either of the “tough/big game” up beside something like Momoi Hi-Catch or Sufix Elite mono, you’ll be pretty surprised at how soft and supple the Momoi and Sufix Elite are. Both of them cast significantly farther for me than the Trilene Big Game (which used to be my favorite).
Now, I just use Power Pro because I get 2-3 times the life out of the line before I respool, and it casts SO much farther than even the Sufix Elite.
If I were buying mono, best bang for the buck regarding durability and castability, I like Momoi (not the Diamond, but the standard Hi-Catch).
