Favorite Fish?

Now I’m hungry! Dang man, if that don’t make somebody’s mouth water, I don’t know what will!
My personal fav is flounder, cooked anyway you want but sheepshead is a close second! Trout and redfish are pretty good as well. And mullet ain’t as bad as yall think, I’ve eaten the big guys a few times! I’ve never haf any offshore fish except mahi, which was good but not my fav. I’m surprised nobody mentioned cobia?

Does bacon count?

Seriously Noob, looking good…

Grilled bonnet-head marinated in balsamic vinaigrette over a bed of garlic buttered rice hits the spot.

Used to catch them in the surf on Amelia Island in the summer when I was stationed in Kbay. You can dig sand fleas from the beach to use for bait.

Funny how different regions have different tastes in fish - I grew up fishing the TX coast and didn’t really eat sheepshead unless there was nothing else but amberjack were a prize (they aren’t usually wormy over there). But the best fish I can remember eating was atlantic croaker wrapped in foil with butter and lemon and cooked over the campfire coals. But it may just be that camping on a deserted beach after the first cold front of the fall makes everything better!

Never tried smoking a whole fish, but I think I’m going to! Looks awesome.

nice thats where im going is kings bay. everyone tells me fishing there is very similar to here inshore and of course whiting, more pompano, sharks, and better kingfishing potential from piers? out of curiosity how about tarpon?

It’s so hard for me to believe that no one has mentioned scamp! Hands down the best fish. Fry it bake it broil it grill it. Can’t be beat! But I do love almost all saltwater fish and the only thing that rivals a good scamp cheek is a skewer of fresh fresh fresh brown shrimp grilled and basted with butter.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Hat’s off to you on that spread. That looks like some spreads I’ve seen in Hawaii. I would dare say 90% of grills around here have only seen poltry, pork, venison, or beef.

figured you might be - not to many other places an hour from Jax for a “NavyNuke”

yep, inshore fishing there is about the same. Fishing from shore is pretty limited, just like around charleston, but if you can get a cheap jon boat or even a kayak you’ll never run out of places to fish.

Pretty sure I’ve heard of people catching tarpon in the St Johns river down around Jacksonville, don’t know anything about kings. Surf fishing was always pretty decent, have to drive down to the FL side to get beach access.

Its a little bit further run to good offshore fishing I think, went out with a friend once or twice and I’m pretty sure we hit about 40 mi to get good bottom. Went on a couple of head boat trips out of Mayport and killed the red snapper - if they ever open snapper again and there are still any boats in business definitely worth checking out!

(sorry everyone for hijacking the thread…)

Any of the snappers but I like Mangroves a lot! Sheepshead, Triggerfish, Flounder all fried!
A bit of lemon and I’m having a good day!

We caught a few small black drum last week and saved a few for the fish fry. Those were the best out of all the fish we caught and I will definitely be keeping them from now on.
