Favorite flies?

Been tying a bit. Streamers, poppers, crystal buggers, gurglers. Then I thought maybe I should tie what works, rather than what I like to tie.

Thought I would take quick in-shore poll:

  1. What two flies do you fish with most?
  2. What size do you use most for in-shore?
  3. Anyone have much experience with the Enrico Puglisi patterns/materials?

I appreciate any ■■■■■■■■.

I still haev yet to land a fish OTF in the salt but I have had goot hits and hookups on Olive and white clousers tied with a little red near the gills, Mad Mikes Mud Minnow (M4), and the Gonzo… I also have had a few break offs on a small shrimp pattern I tied. I tie 2/0 long shanks for my clousers and a size 2 short shank for my shrimp which is all I use for inshore… I have a bunch of copperheads and Chicken heads ( same pattern as the copperhead just tied in pink and green  ) other color clousers, bigger and snaller shrimp… just try to match the hatch with what I see out there… Hit up Mad Mike at teh Mt P Charleston Angler… he is my Yoda… he’s forgotten more about fly fishin around here than I have learned :smiley:

  4. Chart/White Clouser and Margarita Deceiver

  5. I typically use size 2’s the most, but I like 1/0’s when tying bigger deceivers.

  6. Yes, and I love them. I use EP Fibers for tying crab patterns, mullet patterns, and toads. As for their patterns, I really like the everglades minnow in a sand color.

Ever have any luck with crystal buggers in saltwater?

I seem to tie more than fish nowadays, so I have not used the crystal buggers a whole lot. They look fantastic in the water to me. A great imitation of glass minnows or small menhaden.

I have used a foam underbody version it was deadly on bass and bluegill on ponds in black. Best fly I ever used there.

I have used white around here, but just not enough to get a confidence rating yet.

1.Mummichog clouser with extra flash
2.EP mullet w rattle

nice pic!!

I throw clousers most of the time, mainly in Chartruese/white, olive/white, pink/chartreuse and black/orange with copper flash mainly in size 2.

I also fish deceivers grey/white (looks like a mullet) and chartreuse/white and caught a 20 inch flounder on the grey version size 2/0 last week. Hell of a fight he put up, I’ll see if I can upload the pics.

For floating flies i use Gurglers, for small shrimp/minnows under the lights at night i use Norm’s crystal shminnow and for shrimp patterns Tom Thomas’s Shrabster.

EP fibers make some really good looking flies in the water, but I haven’t used them much. They don’t seem to push as much water as a deceiver does, so I just keep going to the deceiver over them. I know when tying them the key is to take the less is more approach and use mono thread.

Great info, but what the heck is shrabster? A shredded hamster?

Seriously - I have never heard of it. I did a quick image search and got zip.

I agree, Bob Clouser for President! its hard to not love this fly, EP is making great flies as well. after much contemplation,

  1. clouser
  2. small olive crab fly, wool
never larger than no2, usually no6 mustad 34007
i like messin w the ep fibers, it flares like deer hair when torqued making for good profiles/heads. they are fairly easy; a tail, then flare the sides. razor a store bought one and note the progression of materials is how i got it right. they are expensive but very very durable. his epfibers are $ too but you will save some green making your own. there are so many colors, i just buy white and color the tops with a prismapen or sharpie. Ive been tying basically the same fly with DNA fibers, fusion i think with good results. the longer patters fouls rarely but often enough to piss you off, a short mono spike or look will stop the tail from fouling. the material does not flare as good(not as stiff) for the head but makes a slimmer profiled fly.

and I vote Scotty D for Veep!!
