For something like a jig head (which tend to have a slightly “heavier” hook) I prefer a medium heavy. That little extra backbone helps with hook penetration. That said, you can’t paint all actions with one brush. With ALX, the BOKU series has a “Speck”, a “Slot” and a “Spottail” line of rods. The Speck is going to be lighter and “slower” actions than the Slot and the Slot will be lighter and slower than the Spottail.

Buying direct from ALX, you’ll be paying full MSRP. He does that to help promote sales with his dealers.

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

What kind of price difference is there in store?

Depending on which series/line and which specific rod you’re looking at, $15-$20, give or take a couple of bucks.

Yes, the Triumph freshwater will work just fine in the salt.

Your higher end rods will boast lighter and more sensitive blank material and higher quality components like reel seats, guides, grip design/material. They’ll also typically boast a better warranty. Other than that, they’ll all catch fish. You don’t need to spend a couple of hundred dollars or more on a rod and a couple of hundred dollars on a reel to catch fish. It’s just a matter of what you want to spend to be able to do so. I use all ALX rods and Quantum PT reels and I have confidence in my gear. Regardless of which setup I pick up, it feels familiar to me and I know what to expect out

I like to throw plastics and thought I had a pretty good set up with a nice new Shimano Stradic and decent rod in the $200 range. Bought at Hadrells with help from Mike. Thought it was a great set up.
Then, my wife who made a nice check in december went to see Mike again at Hadrells and, without my knowledge essentially said “what is the best combo you have?” So for Christmas I unwrapped a GLoomis walleye and the insane Shimano Stella reel. I really would have found it difficult to justify the price, particularly the reel, but i just love using this combo and pretty much use it 90% of the time now. Doesnt help me catch more fish, still learning, but it is just such a pleasure to use. cheers

Well I’ve been torn between going back with a baitcaster (have used them for years) or getting a nice spinning reel and rod. The more I thought about it it frustrated me, so I figured if it’s not broken don’t fix it. So I ordered a shimano curado 200i today and hoping to make the trip to haddrels tomorrow to look at a few rods. Likely going with the st croix mojo. Hoping this combination is exactly what I’m looking for.

Well after the trip to haddrells I came back with a little different rod. The store was great and the staff was very helpful, after holding the st croix premier and triumph Simon handed me the star seagis and that rod and the shimano curado felt like a perfect match. I could not be more pleased with this rod and reel. Now hopefully to get out this weekend and try it out on some fish. Thanks for everyone’s help it was much appreciated.

Great Shane, throw up a pic of the first fish you catch on it!
Cheers

Ah man you never said BAIT-CASTER for the reel! I too have a Curado for all my freshwater fishing and LOVE IT. Congrats enjoy and get after them! I was totally thinking spinning rods and reels…

Second cast with the new rod and reel was successful. One of my better days out there so far.
