Favorite rod, length, and action

So I normally fish a shimano citica on an all star rod 6’6 medium heavy. Getting another reel soon and thinking of getting another rod. So what are you guys favorite rods and why? Local would be even better.

St. Croix Mojo 7ft medium action best around for inshore

casting rod St Croix Triumph 7ft med fast. simply amazing. never had a rod that you could feel everything. just need a better reel.

Grand Slam…What!!! Do you mean at Denny’s! Man do I love pancakes!

I have been looking at the st croix and debating about going to a 7’ this time to get the lighter lures a little farther out there. I love my citica I’ve fished it for close to 10 years and it still works flawlessly.

ALX Rods fill every spot in the rod rack for me. I’ve been using these rods since the early 2000’s (back when he only made custom rods) and there’s not a better rod (in my opinion) on the market. I actually used to fish bass tournaments with the owner back when he had time to fish them. I predominantly use spinning gear while inshore fishing so I use his BOKU line (the actions are designed more for inshore saltwater fishing but work great in freshwater too). Depending on what I’m doing, I use 7’ or 7’6" length rods. As far as casting rods, I have a few custom rods from him, one of his ENOX rods and several of his ZOLO rods. They are a SC company (Aiken). Palmetto State Armory is his largest dealer in SC but you can buy them online too (ALX website and Tackle Warehouse) if you prefer. Support a SC company AND get an incredible rod…win-win.

The real question is what type of fishing and what type of fish?

For inshore I have everything for horsing reds out of structure to light action for throwing little plastic for trout.

My girlfriend got me the G-Loomis Walleye 7’1" extra fast light action and it has insane touch and feel! I never believed the hype about the higher end rods but I do now!!!

I have always been a St. Croix guy and I have 8 or 9 of their rods most are the Premier series and I have two Mojo. If you are a made in america kinda guy stick with the premier they made right here in Minnesota as the Mojo are out of the factories in Mexico.

Everything from the Premier 7’ medium heavy down to the Mojo 6’10" medium light are pretty darn good rods. These typically run 109.00-129.00 and I recommend you part them with a equally nice reel.

If you want custom made local rods look up Ralph Phillips or go to Haddrells in Mt. P and talk to Steve.

To say that one rod meets every specifications would be a broad statement.

Looks like Hookem covered most bases.

What kind of fishing will you be doing ??

The Mojo mentioned first is a great popping cork rod, artificals not so much.

The Triumph is the best $90 rod on the market that’s just my opinion. They make a heavy action rod for Carolina Rigs, down to the lighter actions for throwing artificals like the TRS70MLF.

The St. Croix Premier, is a great feeling rod and I have one matched to 1000 Reel that a throw strictly artificals with. The PS70MLF.

I haven’t used an ALX rod but I have felt them, seem like nice rods.

The Walleye is the Cats Meow for GLoomis Rods, but with that said it’s also $400, if you’re in that market its hard to beat. The $400 Tackle Direct pricing is the same I will offer you at Haddrell’s.

Custom is great too, if you have a specific reel you’re trying to match to a specific rod.

Shoot me a message or call me at the shop if I can help anymore.

I typically throw artificial lures on jig heads for trout and redfish. I will put on some spinner baits every now and then. I considered going to a Medium over a medium heavy and a 7’ to throw the lighter lures a little farther. Aiken is about 40 minutes from me so may try to run over and see some of the ALX rods.I have always used a 6’6 medium heavy rod for all of my needs, not saying that is correct.

Would a medium light be good for throwing artificial with jig heads? I think I normally throw a medium weight jig head like 3/16.

For something like a jig head (which tend to have a slightly “heavier” hook) I prefer a medium heavy. That little extra backbone helps with hook penetration. That said, you can’t paint all actions with one brush. With ALX, the BOKU series has a “Speck”, a “Slot” and a “Spottail” line of rods. The Speck is going to be lighter and “slower” actions than the Slot and the Slot will be lighter and slower than the Spottail.

Buying direct from ALX, you’ll be paying full MSRP. He does that to help promote sales with his dealers.

I’m 30-40 minutes from aiken so figured direct maybe easier. I have a PSA about an hour from me, may go there and look at them. Thanks for the information on them.

Hurricane I’ll message you about seeing what you keep in stock, $200 is my max for a rod right now but looking to pick something up this weekend.

Jig head size all depends on water depth and tidal flow and what will allow the bait to decend at the desired rate. Look at a 7’ med or med light. You will be able to throw a trout eye with a trout trick a country mile. This also depends on the line you choose and the length of your leader. If your knot is pinging every eye in the rod you will lose distance. I will say the high end line from seagar 20lb around a 4lb diameter flies off the reel! It’s expensive and can be a pain to tie new leader knots in the wind though.

Good luck enjoy your search.

My go to rod is a Falcon Low Rider Salt.Gulf caster 7’6 M spinning and casting. They also make a great topwater rod. St Croix would be my second choice. paired with a stradic C14 and Calcutta 50

What kind of price difference is there in store?

So as I look into the Triumph from St. Croix, I see one for freshwater with lots of actions/lengths, and then a Triumph SURF model that is only MH/H and LONG.

Are the freshwater ones okay in the salt?

HeII yea…They are my go to, like Hurricane said they are the best bang for the buck at 89-99$, very lightweight and extremely sensitive. I decided to try one out about 3 years ago…I now own 4 on all my artie set-ups!

I am glad you posted this, with this affordable price I can get 2 for the price of some of the others. Might have to give it a try.

When you go to Haddrell’s, put a Star Seagis #8-17 in your hands too! More money, but soooo nice! (thanks again to Will in WH for steering me right!) Unbeatable warranty too…forgot to take mine out of the rocket launcher one day and backed the boat under the house, snapped the top 1/3 off and about cried! Head hung, went back into Haddrell’s prepared to purchase another and was reminded of the warranty, $10 buck (if I remember correctly) for a new replacement !!

Edit, mine are spinning
