Favorite rod/reel for stripers?

Thinking of getting a new outfit. Leaning toward a 6500 or 7000 AG on a 8’ rod. Might want it to double for some inshore fishing at the coast too.

What’s your favorites on the lakes for trolling and live bait fishing?

I use 6500C’s on a 7 1/2’ Med/Light Ugly Stick and like them, but can’t really say I tried a whole lot of other combos.

Inshore I pretty much only fish artificials, so I switch over to spinning tackle. I would think they would be fine though if you are looking to do some inshore live or cut bait fishing.

I’m with striperskiff on Ambassadeur 6500C3’s. I like the Ugly Stik USCA76 (white striper model) for down rods as it has a soft tip and moderate to slow action. For planer boards and cut bait I like the black Ugly Stik CAL1100 7’6" as it has a faster action with more stiffness in the midsection. It’s hard to beat the value of the Ugly Stiks.

AG all the way. But don’t waste your money on some of them (BCX models). I personally Couldn’t afford the 6500c3’s when I was reoutfitting o. My Striper gear last month but I bought the old 6000 red ones off eBay. I got 4brand new ones and one used and avg about $50-60each. The thing about buying the 6000’s is they are cheaper but with about another 10-15 per reel you can upgrade them go 65’s by adding one bearing and adding a carbon drag system which all can all be bought at smoothdrags. That’s just my experience. By the way can’t beat the ugly sticks.

Me too on the 6500’s and white Ugly Sticks!!

…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!

Thanks for the info:smiley:

Scott X2S 7# with a Ross or Lamson Reel and a Wulff Clear Intermediate Line/flouro leader:wink:

X2 on the 6500, but I think the 7’ Ugly Stik CAL 1100 Med. rod is a better rod for striper/inshore duty. I have both and prefer the black stik over the white one, IMHO.

I have caught 100% of my stripers on spinning reels. Everything from 2 different Stradic combos to a couple of cheapo Okuma combos. It’s what I have from saltwater fishing, and they have worked great for me. Down lines, trolling, and casting huge plugs. I know the “standard” seems to be Abu’s, but it can be done with others. Personally if you are looking for a jack of all trades reel, you can’t go wrong with a 5000 Stradic, and a sturdy rod. Or if you want a cheaper outfit, I love the new 500 Penn Fierce combos. Every bit as smooth as my Shimanos for half the price. Also don’t rule out Pflueger, they just came out with a really sweet baitcaster.

I use the Penn 209 and the CAL1100 7 foot ugly stik…the penn reels have a great star drag and lever lock to get them set just right. I scout Ebay for the older Penn’s though as I want the SS spools and not the plastic…been using this rig for trolling. For downlining I use the Penn 9 combined with the 1100 rod. The 9 is just a smaller version but still has the excellent star drag and locking snap lever and brake system.

Last year some one broke into my boat shed an releved me of 12 striper rigs! I had aquired over the last 25 yrs some were 6500 and some were 6000 ABU I also had 3 Penn 975 Internationals all on 8 or 8.5 ft salmon rods. My insurance is $1000.00 deductable and I was told to buy new equiptment and when I reached the deductable to turn in the recepts and they would remburse me, you know how that worked?
Well, I ordered eight 8’ downrigger rods and 8 bass pro 6500 knockoffs for less than $400 and am verry pleased with them! I spooled 4 with 15# Stren clear for down rods and spooled 4 with 15# Stren high vis yellow for free line and plainer board rigs they work great. Diod you know if your door is not locked the law cannot arrest some one for break and entering? I now keep my hand gun and shot gun loaded all the time even carry on the water!

I need to update my statement. Friday I picked up an Abu 5500 C3 and a 7’6" rod. It became my new lucky rod Saturday night as it caught fish 2:1 over my spinning gear. The drag was a lot smoother on it when the fish began to run as well. Just the right amount of pressure. My spinning reels go from too little drag to too much drag pretty quickly.

Well it’s done. Got a new 6500c3 on a 7.5 Cal UglyStick Med-light. Fells great. Spooled it up with 20# suffix superior. Can’t wait to try it out. It will go along with my 5500 on a 7’ AG rod and a Penn9 on a 8’ Berk BigGame.

How do you like that Penn 9? I have heard of others using those reels for Striper off the coast, but it seems like a lot of cranking to get them up from 60’-80’ around here. That’s what, about 60 cranks to get them to the boat?

Congrats on the new combo.

Nix on the Penn 9s have had them and they have plastic gears dont last a year!

I have a couple of Penn Mag 10’s I occassionally still use. Had them for 20+ years and still working fine.

I’ve had the penn9 for years. Pier and boat fished with it. It does have a low gear ratio but a good smooth drag. It will winch 'um in too. I’ve landed a bunch of sharks and big rays with it. Some big river cats. Never had a problem. I have 20#ande on it. If you clean the factory grease out of them and go back with red rocket fuel they cast pretty good. Not as good as a Abu but far enough to fish. Thinking toward using it with a planer/dredge or a dipsey diver and double rig.

My brother has 2 of the mag10’s and catfishes with them for 15-20yrs-loves them.
