Feel Like an Old Man Casting

I tried to tell you, its a pain when they aren’t there. Not to mention digging through a basket full of small fish for a few shrimp.
But when they are there thick with good size, there is no limit, so one trip will make your season! Glad you could catch some though. Good luck in the future!

Watched a bunch of videos, but no one says exactly what is happening with each coil you put in your hand, or the part in your mouth, over your shoulder etc. It seems the key is what you do with your hands at the end.

I watched a guy at a Tidal pond one day and noticed what he did was very, very simple. He puts his rope coils in his right hand, then he grabs horn and puts it in right hand, then reaches down and grabs the net again below waist and put that in his right hand. He then reached down and got the lead line close to him and put it between his first finger and thumb on right hand, then grabs lead line again with his LEFT hand. (This is same string of leads that are in his right hand.) He now holds the lead line in his left hand straight out to his left. He then rotates backward a bit and tosses the net with his right hand moving from palm up to palm down and making sure the right hand comes over the left hand. He was throwing a 10’ net and getting perfect circle everytime. No more in the mouth, no more flipping wet netting around your leg, no more over the shoulder. This is without a doubt the most dry way to throw a net over and over and really quick to learn. I am still getting a few tacos when I throw, but just as good or better than any other method. I have not seen a video on this method.

Sounds like your describing something similar to how i throw now. This is the easiest, dryest way I’ve seen to throw. And no putting part of the net in your mouth. It loads easily and opens every time, as long as you make the full motion and cross your hands like he explains. Good luck!!

Firstboat, if you need someone to teach you, send me a PM. I’m far, far from an expert but I can teach you how to open a standard 5-7’ net. I don’t have any tips for tossing a net at 70, but perhaps I can offer you something helpful with a hands-on.

The more brute force you are using to try to open the net, the less likely you are to open it, and the quicker you’ll wear yourself out.

A good form in loading and tossing the net will gain you much more open casts and less wear/tear on your shoulders.

I will not put a cast net in my teeth and so for a long time, I struggled to find the easiest way to throw a 6, 7, or 8’ cast net (OK I’m also lazy so I wanted the easiest way). Go to Youtube and search for “Throw cast net no teeth”. This one’s shows the method I use.
