Feel Like an Old Man Casting

Any ideas? I have been prepping for shrimping since last year. I could not throw the net last year, and only a little better this year. I intentionally lost a bunch of weight, 75 pounds and have been exercising my arms and shoulders 3 or 4 times a week for a few of months.

I have a new smaller, 6 ft, Beau Pro cast net. I have watched the Calusa video several times, and I think I am still doing everything right except my age, and I can’t do anything about that. I know we have others out there in their 70’s shrimping like they always did. I need some senior suggestions that don’t include “give it up.”

75 lbs??

You are probably tired from getting so skinny.

Go get a case of bud heavies and spend an evening @ JB’s on johns island and work on that for a couple days and see if it helps!

I’ve had 2 open heart valve jobs in the last year and the Dr told me to never try to throw a net so I just received my commercial draggers Permit and am going to try it tomorrow! will let you know what happens

From personal experience, there’s just as much manual labor in pulling tthat thing in and back out over and over again. I think I worked harder with the trawl net than I ever did with the cast net!

You need a blue pill for your net…

Hey, I am a girl and I have been throwing a net since I was 7 years old. I am only 5’4"…we throw a 6 ft Bets for at least 8 hours…you need to be a little fit but here is my technique…

Horn in left hand…straighten out
Throw a few beads over right shoulder
Grab a few in front put in mouth…some omit this part
Choke up on net
Grab a few beads on left side of mouth
Swing your tail off… I shift my weight from rear to front…like throwing a freesbee

A boating tip…we see a ton of boaters approaching their poles…putting it in reverse…over and over…tough on a motor…try this CIRCLE your poles in a very low gear…it give you enough time to drop shrimp, and re load for the next pole and a ton easier on a motor for 8 hours and you!

Don’t quit!

Also throw in the front yard on bucket it will make you steady on the water…Good luck

I have never thrown a net for eight hours. Either they are there or not. If you circle your poles you are running shrimp off your next pole with the motor.

Watched a bunch of videos, but no one says exactly what is happening with each coil you put in your hand, or the part in your mouth, over your shoulder etc. It seems the key is what you do with your hands at the end.

I watched a guy at a Tidal pond one day and noticed what he did was very, very simple. He puts his rope coils in his right hand, then he grabs horn and puts it in right hand, then reaches down and grabs the net again below waist and put that in his right hand. He then reached down and got the lead line close to him and put it between his first finger and thumb on right hand, then grabs lead line again with his LEFT hand. (This is same string of leads that are in his right hand.) He now holds the lead line in his left hand straight out to his left. He then rotates backward a bit and tosses the net with his right hand moving from palm up to palm down and making sure the right hand comes over the left hand. He was throwing a 10’ net and getting perfect circle everytime. No more in the mouth, no more flipping wet netting around your leg, no more over the shoulder. This is without a doubt the most dry way to throw a net over and over and really quick to learn. I am still getting a few tacos when I throw, but just as good or better than any other method. I have not seen a video on this method.

I think it wears me out more dragging in and clearing the shrimp out of the net. Especially if those suckers get stuck in the webbing. Throwing is the easy part.

Life Is Good…Gotta Love It!!!

Boatpoor, can you PM me about the dragger method and how it turns out? I had open heart surgery on July 30th, a new valve, and my recovery has been great so I’m kind of hoping to catch the last month of the season but would be interested in an alternative.

Boatpoor my self would like to know how you do dragging the net. Also could you send some pix of your outfit and rigging. Myself and my partner getting a little stoveup to keep throwning the old net. Will start dragging if its not to bad or costly. Good Luck and have safe winds in your sails.

Yesterday was good.
Today is great.
But living for tomorrow.

the best tip on this whole thread was when Blackhawk said he has never thrown the net for 8 hours and they are either there or not! This deserves a little discussion, I take the time to set 10 poles and own a spot amoungst a lot of other boats that did not want me in their territory in the first place. mix up some premix and wait till it is time to drop some test bait and see if a wave of shrimp will come through or not. OK, did all that, and I am only getting 5 to 10 shrimp a cast and not even that on every pole. now what? move ??? start this whole investment all over again? I am not being sarcastic! I am really asking… I feel like I would lose my shrimping time moving and setting up. What is the final indication that says Here they are. I am committing to this spot for this tide, and put the bait down? I know your not getting 50 shrimp a throw on a test spot. so how do you determine this is the spot.

I normally set my poles and bait my end poles. Give them a little time to find the bait and throw on my test poles. If I’m only getting a few shrimp or they’re real small I’ll move elsewhere. On opening weekend thats going to be tough to find another spot, but later in the season it’s not very hard to move.

When shrimping at night, if they aren’t there when the sun touches the tops of the trees, then they probably ain’t there.

this is a video catching fish…but can be used for shrimping too. never ever wrap rope multiple times around your wrist! in fact…in deeper water and with obstructions …try to learn to tie off to a cleat and not to your wrist at all…i didnt do this for years but now do upon the advice of a friend Robert Olsen—> Knot at Work charters…good advice to keep from being pulled over…also keep a knife handy… I keep one on a lanyard around my neck… i throw everything from a 8-12 foot net…according to where i am and what im trying to catch…and add a additional full length of rope to original one to = about 80 foot of rope…this way you can tie it off with lots of work to work with and also if the wind or current takes you away form cast you dont have to worry about pulling it closed to soon.

practice. anyone gets worn out with bad form. throw with your body/ hips and NOT your arms.

SKR daddy…True one doesn’t throw for 8 hours but when they are in there there is complete insanity our boat…fast paced and wide open…that beer will get warm…game on jack…no mistakes…they are only there for a short time and a full cooler is the only real bragging rights.

Every cast must be open and very good…if not you get the look…I hate the look
The driver must know how to give the thrower enough time to let it sink to the bottom…pull in as fast as you can and get to the first pole
I look for seagulls and pinfish or poggies hitting the water…they are in there…if the shrimp legs are really red they are moving very fast
If the Georgetown paper mill smoke stack is straight that is good… if it is on its side …bad lots of wind

Everone has their own ways… each boat is different…we have coolered out circling poles many times…your right if they are in there thay are in there if not…enjoy the view

Well finely got to pull the net, not mine, belongs to my paster! he and another friend went with me to Otter Island, where we put out the 25’ net with 3’ doors, pulled it with my 30 year old 23’ center consold with an old 115 Yam. 2 stroke.First pull, 30 min we had about 1/2 basket of very smalls, second pull after 10 min. we caught an old crab trap stuck in the sand, took us a half and hour to pull it out had to go the beach to untangle the net and clean it out, at that time the lightning started and we headed to the house. went back Wed at high tide made 4- 40 min. pulls and netted 3 1/2 baskets. took us 4 hours to head Fri. A.M. and to tired to go back. most small and some med. be back in Oct , they should be bigger. Don’t miss the poles and cast net!!
