I’m going to need somewhere close to a 5 gallon bucket of fiberglass resin. Anyone know the best place to get it for cheap?
Also, I want to put one layer of fiberglass the whole length of the keel along the bottom of the hull of my Malibu. I have been told to use the Woven Roving fiberglass cloth as it’s stronger than the chopped glass cloth. I have also seen the woven Kevlar cloth and it looks pretty nifty. Which is the better one to use and what are the pros and cons of each? Any suggestions of where to get the fiberglass cloth for a good price?

Forget using polyester based resin. I know they have been using it for years, but the new epoxies are far superior, and the epoxy finishing coats (paint) shine up just as nice and are much easier to apply. I’m not 100% certain they are cheaper, but I do know the bonding strength and lack of porosity cannot be matched. Also, for areas like the keel, I would got with a biaxial tape verses roven. You might need to add a layer or 2 more, but it’s much easier to work with in areas like this.
Thanks again for the help this weekend. Kids had a blast and can’t wait to go again.
This look familiar? Same boat as yours I believe.

Chris V helped me a ton and supplies were as cheap or cheaper than anywhere else - even Wal Mart. His advice was invaluable. Hope to get the steerig in this week and motor soon after.
PS - Sent you an email through CF.com if the system is working now.
That does look ■■■■ good! mine’s a different layout though. I’ll try to post some pictures tomorrow. Glad ya’ll had fun this weekend. Sorry I wasn’t able to swing by as I rode with my Mom and she had places to go.
I’ll give you a shout in the morning Russ

Thanks. 1979 14’ malibu “bass special” or something like that. It has been a fun project for me. I wish I had taken a few photos when the floor was out. I will post some before and after photos when I get this thing finished.
Triple – what did you finish the inside with to make it all nice and shiney? Looks like it would be pretty easy to clean! My new flats boat needs a little interior help and I plan on spot sanding and cleaning really well and then painting over the paint that is there.
Thanks!

I used Interlux polyurethane brightside for the interior sides and Interlux polyurethane nonskid for the decks. I used a roller to apply. The boat had a splatter finish and I just sanded it enough to clean it up a little. The brightside has a very high gloss so it may have a little glare on a sunny day.
rap, still workin on a trailer. no great leads so far but i’m getting the word out. gimme a shout if you need an extra set of hands this weekend for anything.
Triple, I guess we are both gluttons for punishment.
I’m in the midst of patching up and painting a '66 whaler 13 ft-er for my ‘creek boat’. Its a fun project!
We still gotta hook up and go fishing!
Hope the kids are doing well.
That is cool. Believe it or not, I am in partnership with McColl on this project. He is now driving, has a truck, and should soon have a boat to use. I figure this is a good way to get him started and I won’t have a stroke WHEN he runs it up on an oyster bed etc…
Spring is near and fishing is sounding real good!!!
Yeah, ours will end up being commandeered by the kids too. First, Jake needs the boaters safety course, etc. Did you ‘roll and tip’ the paint? Thats what I am doing to mine, but I’m only concentrating on the back 1/4 of the boat. The entire restore will be a good project for a future winter. I’m using EasyPoxy to paint, but rather the West Marine knockoff of EasyPoxy. Your project looks great and say hi to the family for all of us!
