Has anyone ever had any luck trying to dig up buried crabs during the winter months? If thats not an option what do you guys suggest for rigging methods with oysters for sheepshead? Are you just buying canned oysters or actually shucking them fresh?? Ive called a couple places and to no surprise nobody has crabs bc of the cold weather… any advise or alternative methods are greatly appreciated!
If we get a few warm sunny days in a row the fiddlers will come to the top of there holes to sun and some time heard up in the winter. Go in the low tide stages in the 12 to 3 pm window for the best result. I like to target higher grass areas that are not hard pack sand or super soft mud. The mud that is like half way between the 2 is the easiest to dig them out of. I spot them at he top of the hole and shove my finger behind them to keep them from going down the hole and grab them out. I try to go to secluded areas so the fiddlers aren’t as skirmish and if there are birds around the fiddlers usually will hide from them and it will make them harder to catch.
I just hook my oysters on the hook real gently, but some people use little mesh pouches like finger gauze and panty hose or the named one brands that are sold. I use a small hook #2 or smaller and hide it completely in the oyster and I think I have a better hook up ratio then crabs.
Its called wraps fishing system and its @ wrapsfishingsystem.com. I’ve never used it but have used home made versions for other fish and drop net baits. I’m sure there is a bunch of stuff similar that would work.
Thanks for the info guys. I was guna try to push out to deeper water last weekend but of course the weather is never right for a weekend warrior…i have heard of using the panty hose so I guess that’s the ticket. Do you guys ever use clams or strictly oysters?
