field and stream eagle talon 12'

does anybody know anything good or bad about this yak?

Look for a used Tarpon or a better fishing kayak. I have gon ethe cheap route and regretted it. If ya have to save your pennies for a real fishing kayak. The extra money buys you a better hull design and let you paddle easier and more confortable and enoy it instead of fighting a kayak that tracks like a drunken Sailor on liberty…

I agree with nikonjedi, I have a P.O.S kayak converted to a fish slayin yak and I’m begining to hate it. As a matter of fact I just Pm’d too busy on which he would suggest a Ride 135 and a Tarpon 120 or 160. . . Convertin any old kayak to a fishing kayak and having a fishing kayak are miles apart. . . I just saw that kayak in Dicks this afternoon. It looked like a pretty good boat to me, but I really do not know much about sit on tops so maybe I am not a good one to say. It did kind of make think a little about maybe selling my Old Town Guide and looking for something like that or maybe that smaller 12’ Old Town pack canoe that they have. I really like that thing.

I love Old Town Canoes. I looked at the Pack, but I wanted a canoe for whitewater racing also, so I went with the Penobscot 16 RX. The Royalex is a noticeable upgrade. If you aren't paddling long distances the pack would be a nice upgrade.

Down here I have an Ocean Kayak Trident 15 (also made by Old Town) in camo. In retrospect she is a little big, but I got it for duck hunting also so I wanted plenty of storage space. She is a fast boat, but can be a pain in some of the smaller creeks.

It doesn’t look like a bad boat, but at that price I think you would be better off with more of a name brand boat. The seat looks to be a clip on style, which can be a pain in the arse (literally) sometimes. Look at a Tarpon, Manta Ray, Ride, Coosa, something with a better seat and a better resale value!

PRICE?!? For $399. That price doesn’t compare to any angler series wilderness or native. The loss in value for resale cannot fall too much compared to the resale value of wilderness, heritage, or native products. . .

NEway…I bought one and I am very satisfied with the way it tracks and the stable nature of the yak. Great value for 399 bucks. Anyway, thanks community. It is a secondary vessel anyway. I use my flats boat most of the time. If it was my primary boat, I would have gone “native route for 1,000 alex”

My bad then, I thought it was $799. 400 is not a bad price at all! Enjoy the boat, hope to see you on the water.

yea, I was looking hard for a used SOT wilderness, native, or heritage for that price and I had a tough time after 12 months of looking. I just couldn’t turn down that one. Price was ideal and it came with all of the bells and whistles that you pay several hundred more for in the higher end brands. My only concern is the seat. Feels great after an hour of paddling, but I may be considering a seat upgrade at some point. Gotta be comfortable on the water.

The sale maybe over now too. I haven’t been back. Thanks for the advice.

Finnaddict, have you had a chance to play in new yak yet? That is one I am thinking about maybe getting when I do sell the Old Town. I have looked at it a couple of times and it just looks like it is pretty well rigged out. Seems like a nice boat for the moeny spent.

I have had it out on two occasions and I am very satisfied. But my kayaking experience is low. I like the way it handles and the way everything is layed out. Like I said before, I may have gone with a different one and I really had my eyes on the heritage redfisher, but when Dick’s put this yak on clearance for $399, I couldn’t resist for a brand new yak with all of the accessories I was looking for. This will be my secondary vessel and I will probably not use but a 8-10 times per year realistically.

Unfortunately, I went by Dicks Sporting Goods on Sunday and the price is back to $799. They had 6 when I bought mine and they still have the five remaining.
