Saw an article on post and courier .com about how developers are planning to fill in a portion of filbin creek to expand a shopping center. Does anyone here fish filbin creek (or the mouth of it) or think they shouldn’t fill it in for whatever reason? Anyone think that filling it in would be a good thing?
Well to me it seems that the portion that they are filling in is way up the creek and may or may not have any actual effect on the navigable portion of the creek. If they don’t control the sediment runoff, the sandbars that are there now will only get worse.
I am glad to hear how the CCL is going to fight it. I would like to hear exactly what the mitigation strategy is going to be.
I have to pull environmental permits all of the time and it doesn’t take much to be classified as a “wetland.” I do see many cases where something should not have been built. They just put up a crap load of HUD homes down the street from me, and it is clearly wetland. I think there is a pretty good case for “money talks and BS walks” in this situation. If North Charleston want’s it and the developers are willing to grease the wheels and do some mitigation I don’t think CCL will be able to stop it in the long run. Maybe short term? It’s always, always, always, about the money.
The idea of putting “walking trails” along the creek is ludicrous. If you have any idea of how bad the neighborhoods are around there…well let me give you an idea…the creek is full of fecal coliform…it will take an unbelievable increase in police manpower to patrol these walking trails…or what will likely be drug routes…or sleeping places for the homeless.
Growing up here, I have seen a lot of natural habitat destroyed. Heck, I used to hunt, fish, and camp where the Mt Pleasant Town Center is. I won’t even shop there now.
