Finally a day to sleep in ... and post a report ..

Had to take a day off today from work AND fishing in order to get to sleep in for the first time in 6 weeks … Yesterday was a GREAT day fishing with Liz … We caught 28 fish yesterday (not including 3 gar) in 6 hours … Our biggest Striper was 12+ pounds … Had a couple 8+ pound fish and three 7+ pound fish …

Fishing was so hot we burned through 4+ dozen baits and ended up switching over to umbrella rigs and slow trolled back to the house … Caught six more on U-Rigs with one double and a 7+ pounder to end the morning …

Took RJ out in the evening to hunt topwater and despite the churned up waters from the weekend warriors still managed to put RJ on fish as well …

Not a whole lot of time to take pictures and I didn’t even have time to put out the GoPros but did manage to get a couple pics …

Can’t beat the views on Lake Murray …

Smallest fish of the day … LOL

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

2005 Sea Pro 2100cc / Yamaha 150hp 4-Stroke

oh yeah … Fished the Lexington side from Shull Island to the Condos in water depths from 10 to 80 feet (so pretty much everything … LOL) … Pulling live herring from Ned’s Better Bait & Tackle on planer boards, freelines, and float lines …

Thanks for the report, Rick. 28 fish is a winner of a day in my book. Congrats.

congrats on your success. nice to see the young man fishing. I was able to visit my grandson today and spent a little while with him fishing ponds in his neighborhood. we caught a few small bass but i could see how special it was for him (and me!) having someone to share time and fishing talk. His father only sees him once in awhile and his father doesn’t fish, it would interfere with golf.

Congrats on the fish. Lake Murray is beautiful isn’t it. Especially early in the morning, or late in the evening.

It was feast or famine on Murray yesterday … heard several reports of boats catching 20+ and even 30-40+ fish … heard other boats caught little to nothing … I will say that those boats still pulling boards did well yesterday …

I completely understand (except golf - never could get into that game)… all of our kids (three daughters & two sons) fish …

While they are kids and as such don’t always enjoy going fishing as often as my Wife and I do, each can certainly hold his/her own on the water … and I have the catch pictures (and freezer) to prove it … LOL

Nice catch and great pictures, ya’ll got it dialed in now!

28 fish in 6 hrs., how do you do it Rick? You’re going to have to take me out sometime & school me.

I will say that I am getting a little more comfortable fishing with the planer boards.

I hear ya … but I’ll bet you’re glad we didn’t enter the TX …   … What was your total weight? I think we might have had ya, if not you, then 2nd and definitely 3rd based on what I heard …

It would have been close depending on how the fish held weight. We had between 41 and 42 pounds(I think) at the scales with BF being a little under 11. Either way we would have lost out on BF so thanks for not playing! I was just happy to see some good quality cutbait fish again. They dried up for a couple weeks for some reason. Now it’s time to prepare for Lake World’s catfish tournament coming up at the end of the month.

We were able to keep all of our fish alive last Wednesday so we probably would have weighed in live fish on Saturday … … Great job on the win!!!

Time is almost over for “traditional” planer boards … but I’m not a “traditional” fisher … we still use planers to pull downrods in the summer to cover more area … Most boats will search for the schools and drop lines on them … We troll planers and cover the entire area from the towers to Spence and from Spence to Bomb, etc., …

We can take you out sometime … This next weekend is shot because Erika is graduating from LHS this weekend … maybe the following week/end

Crusher, How fast are you pulling the down rods on the planers? I do the same thing but just curious how fast you troll.

I was going to ask the same thing. Also, how deep are putting your down rods? Do you adjust the depth on your rods depending on the water depth?

Inquiring minds want to know!

(PS: I’m not sure about going with you next week end. I’ve got a side job coming in tomorrow morning.)

I will usually drop the lines with 3 or 4 oz weights … putting them a couple feet over the highest line of Stripers which is generally around 40’ - 50’ down and then pull them off the edges of the main river channel from the towers to Spence and back again at speeds of .7 - .8 mph …

Basically I’m pulling them just like I normally pull planers with no weights only much much deeper and not as wide (because the weights don’t allow the planers to pull parallel with the boat) … I have line counter reels that take a lot of the guesswork out of the equation …

Oh, and if you are going to pull weights with planers, you had better get something bigger than Waterbugz … We use Redneck Planers but the Outcasts will also do just fine
