Finally got it going

Picked up a TFO BVK 8wt this week. I decided to go with the Allen Fly Fishing Kraken reel. Also got a great deal on a peak rotary vise and tied up my first flys. Thank you guys for all your advice which helped me make some of my decisions. Here are a few pics…

I hope to have some more fly pics to come and also a redfish or two. Gotta practice my double haul a little more but so far so good!

That looks great! I have been trying to decide on an 8 or 9 wt. bvk

I went with the 8wt… It was suggested to me that if you’re only planning on having one saltwater fly rod that the 8wt is a little more versatile than the 9. I also plan on tossing bugs at largemouth in my aunts pond. I will always have my spinning gear with me so wind isn’t really an issue for me. If its nice I will try the fly if its blowing I will pick up the faithful stradic CI4s and let er rip! If I was only going to fly fish I would have chose the 9wt. Maybe this will help you…

But what do I know I’m just starting myself! So don’t take my word for it lol

Thanks! I have an 8wt for Freshwater and I have been looking to have on dedicated for Salt as well. I am not sure how much I will really be in saltwater but I know that if I don’t want to kill my reel, I need a sealed reel. I figure that I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I haven’t fished a BVK, but I have cast one, and it cast like a rocket. It was effortless to throw a tight loop out to 80 ft or so. If you’re going to have one fly rod for salt, I think the 8 wt is the size to have.

A suggestion, if I may. I did the same thing when I first started throwing the flyrod years ago. I didn’t really develop my cast until I committed entirely to the flyrod. You’ll probably talk yourself into using the spinning rod unless it’s a condition with very little wind which handicaps you in the fly game.

Do yourself a favor and leave the spinning rod at home. Trust me.

X2 on what Jerms said. Leave the spin rod at home. Learn to tie some Gurglers for those LMBs and you will forget all about spinnerbaits and the like
