Finally some fresh produce

Had some Kale, broccoli, onions and radishes from the garden Sunday.

Tried something new with the Kale.

In a large frying pan, just a little olive oil(neighbor said to use bacon grease but the wife gave me so much grief I caved), softened up the onions then added the kale. Covered with lid and added 2tbs of water, let simmer until tender.

Pretty good like that. Next batch will just get boiled in water though.

Fred, I’ve been getting lots of fresh greens in my weekly CSA share(can’t have much of a garden out on this island due to the deer!). A new favorite I’ve discovered with fresh greens is the following:

Chop 6-8 cloves of fresh garlic, saute in olive oil until just starting to brown. Add greens and turn heat to high to “wilt.” Add some red wine vinegar, a healthy squeeze of Dijon mustard, some chopped walnuts, pecans or pine nuts and mix thoroughly. Serve over or toss with cooked warm pasta - whole wheat, preferably.

This would make a great healthy meal on it’s own, but we have to have some sort of protein on the table at dinner time at my house - been making this as a side dish for the past couple of weeks - Jack prefers pine nuts, and I prefer pecans so far…

With this CSA deal, I’ve found we absolutely love arugula! I thought I hated it before, but I don’t think I quite knew what to do with it. Kinda like with most greens, you’ve got to experiment!

Hope I didn’t get my garden in too late, just planted the other week a bunch of kale, lettuce, radishes, few other things I can’t remember and all the tags got blown away by the winds last week! Got a bunch of herbs goin too.

Not too late at all… I gambled and planted every thing early… Won’t have too long when the dead heat of summer hits your lettuce and Kale though.

Never tried any arugula. The wife did cook some rutabaga leaves thinking they were turnip greens… not bad at all. More like a collard.

Will defiantly try the garlic. After finding that it is about the only thing that my daughters stupid goat won’t eat, planted a 100’ row of it along the fence this winter.

Was working in a plantation one summer and they had about an acre field with nothing but what the care taker called “old world” garlic. He let me take some and have been growing it since. Mostly clusters but sometimes you get a single bulb as bis as onion.
