finally tried trout trick but need help

first time user determined to catch fish on trout tricks, did what Bob advised, or so I thought. caught plenty but for some reason either missed or lost about 3 to every 1 I caught. Most I lost seemed hooked and fought for about five seconds before coming off. Setting the hook too soon, too late, too soft a rod tip?

The timing is something I have worked very hard at learning. I’ve been there. Still learning!
But yes I do think its a timing thing. There is a very fine line between too early and too late, IMO.

I have limited experience with TT and an even more limited experience catching fish with them but, the difference in bites is what surprises me. I have had trout just attack it like they were mad and others almost lip it. On those softer bites, a couple times I found if I let it sink back down and worked it again, they almost always bite again.

watch your line. you’ll be surprised how many ticks you see but don’t feel.

also i’ve had them just run into the bait and apparently not “eat” it. I’ve hooked a bunch of them foul, in the head, mid body, etc. I think Bob says they just hit the bait sometimes out of anger not necessarily to eat it. he knows stuff.

The TroutTrick must be allowed to fall STRAIGHT down on a 1/8th ounce
jighead (3/0) to create the reaction bite. With your rod pointed at the
lure, reel in the slack and give a couple of jerks, then drop the rod tip
to allow bait to fall STRAIGHT down again. In shallow water jerk sideways.
The trout will hit it on the fall or pick it up off the bottom, hence your
jerk becomes a hookset. We think the ribs create a vibration saltwater
trout home in on. It is so strong that when you fish through a school of
totally negative fish, they will strike with their mouths closed.
Eventually you will foul hook one and realize what is going on. Because of
this, I’ve located schools of fish I would have fished through with other
baits.

^ True. Also, it’s very important that you manage your line bow on the drop. You want a slack line so it falls straight down, but you don’t want to lose contact with the lure. You need to feel (or see) that very slight tick on the drop. Like DF said, sometimes they nail it, and other times its a very light bite. Seems that the bigguns are often the light bite.

What Op and Pea say. Also, being a line watcher makes for a depth finder. You can locate subtle ledges that can be trout magnets.

Get in a habit of keeping your index finger on the line after you “work” the lure off the bottom. You will be surprised at how much you’re missing not doing this.

a lot of helpful advice. it was a bit windy. Bob says “reel in the slack and give a couple of jerks”. Should the jerks be subtle or hard? Would fluorocarbon line help? I know there’s no magic fix all but with some good advice and more practice i’ll get better. Thanks all!!

Anyone else feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but the jerks serve two main purposes: to raise the lure off the bottom by a few feet, and also to get the fishes attention. They will sense the abrupt motion. I would say the jerks should not be too subtle. However, during the fall is when you must be focused! On the hook set, this works for me: When you feel/see the tick simply raise the rod tip a couple feet… thats all. How much to raise depends on how much bow is in your line. No reeling, no Bill Dancing!

Fluoro can never hurt, especially in very clear water, but I continue to use 10# power pro green braid tied directly to the jig, and still have good success.
