Finally!

Went to the Ashley River at mid-tide and nailed a couple trout! I let my 2 year old do all the fishing…maybe that was the trick. That and I used live mud minnows for the first time. Caught a few keepers, but put them back. I need those fish to be there when I strike out in the harbor:wink: It was a beautiful day out. A tad windy, but nice! Used a popping cork with a 2 foot leader. Casted out, waited about 20 seconds, did one more pop and they couldn’t get enough! Thanks for all the advice, guys and gals! It was nice to watch my lil’ man reel in those fish. I wish I could post a video… I casted the bait and he took it from there! Proud Dad moment! Now to take my Brother on a sheepshead adventure when he gets back from USAF Tech School. I’ll buy fiddlers this time instead of frozen, dead shrimp! Thanks again, folks! Hopefully I’ll post some more this week!

Also, I have had several invites on boats and offers for people to tag along with me. I sincerely appreciate and won’t forget the offers! Everyone I’ve talked to on the forums are, truly, the nicest people I’ve had dialogue with and can’t wait to meet some of you guys in person and on the water! The holiday’s are just hectic… A lot of pier fishing these last few weeks.

Good for you! Feels good doesn’t it!

You got that right! I let my son reel all of them in. It made his day and a memory I won’t forget!

Congrats. Good Stuff

I used to let my son do that, but he’s 4 now and can throw the rod by himself just fine, but he wants to play and goof off with the rod. So he watches dad reel in his fish while he gets frustrated at not catching anything lol. Making him learn the hard way, but he’s learning for sure.

Thanks for the post, I love watching fellow dads take their little ones out for fun fishing!

still cant imagine issac goofing off and playing with his tackle much like i always did when i was his age  sometimes the hard way is also the BEST way to learn. once they do learn though seeing little kids catch fish like that is one of the best things there is!

Dustin,
Good for you on getting your son hooked on fishing. But, PLEASE, put a life jacket on him when you on the water. It would only take a split second for him to fall in the water and then anything could happen. This is in no way a reflection on your parenting skills, just a word of fatherly advice from a dad and granddad. Better safe than sorry and Happy Holidays!

Redfish, he scares the piss outta me sometimes , but refuses to wear that life jacket. The last thing I wanna do is have to dive in after my boy sinking in the river. So, as his dad, I need to enforce it. I get too confident in him and all it would take is a strong wind to knock his clumsy ass in…

Get the lad some swimming lessons at the “Y” this winter so he will be ready for spring. Life jacket is good. Life jacket plus the ability to swim is even better. My two sons were taught to swim before they were three. It is well worth the small investment in time and money.

When my son was 2 and early 3’s, I required him to wear a life jacket even when we were on a floating dock. Sometimes even if we were lakeside if the water dropped off quickly. My son is very, very active (not more than normal, but certainly at the upper tier of “normal” lol). I’d never stand a chance of catching him if he ran off the edge of a dock.

if anyone knows where an indoor pool is reasonably close to goose creek and biggest thing i can find time i did 10 years of competitive swimming (4 years NCAA) and would be happy to teach kids how to swim if need be! we used to do 1 on 1 lessons for all ages every year as a college team fundraiser and on top of that my recruiter had me work with the SEAL candidates with no pool experience to improve their swim time before they went to boot camp…worked with pretty much all levels at one point. just gotta find the time would be the biggest thing but id be happy to help if needed.

Great report. My two sons are 10 and 8 and I still get a thrill watching them reel in the fish. Way to go!

arent you required to wear one up to the age of 12?! or is that just a boat rule?

“Fish On!”

Boat rule. And only while it is in motion.
