Finding previous registered owner in GA?

I am in the middle of a mess, through no fault of my own for once. I am having difficulty getting a boat titled in SC. I bought it from an active duty Marine in Beaufort. He had a lein on it from GA. I gave him enough to cover the lein in GA and get the UCC released.

Ok, no problem there. I have that info and a notarized bill of sale. Well, he never transferred the registration to his name in GA. He bought it at a small dealer/consignment place.

SC DNR told me they need a paper trail from the last registered owner. I went through the GA website where you can search reg numbers and the reg or HIN do not come up. GA6046KW the sticker shows 07 as last reg year.

So, I can wait on him and keep pressuring him like I have been, try and do it myself, or, I can demand my money back. I was told that I could get the MP involved since everything took place on base and the notary was their lawyer.

My luck really sucks. I thought when the bank was paid, they released the title or something. I have learned a lot about these non-title states.

He should have had a Ga registration and you shouldn’t have paid him without it. With that being said, I would call the Ga DNR or whatever they are called. Give them the vin and maybe they can track it down. They also might have a state or county website that you could search for it on your own.

Good luck.

Don’t know if this will help or not, but might be worth a shot: https://jc.activeoutdoorsolutions.com/gdnr_vrs/downloads/boatData.do

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

MattR! PM sent! Problem fixed.

I just had that same problem when i bought my boat in GA. The guy I bought it from never register the boat in GA the boat was last register to the previous owner he bought in from in FL. SO the boat was register to the FL owner still. BUT I had the title in my hand and bill of sale. I did have at least a transfer of title on the back of the title so it shows the boat was sold to the guy i bought it from who signed it and turned it over to me. Charleston DNR didn’t know crap about their own rules and regulations about title and registrations, THEY SUCKED and the SUPERVISOR there SUCKS TOO! They were rude that I was bothering their busy day, but they had no problems taking my 350 Dollars in title and registration fees though!

I talked to a lady name Kim at the Columbia DNR head office, who was very courteous and informative about their laws. She told me to send everything to her and she would take care of it as long as i sent her all the paperwork.

Kim told me that you can’t make someone register their boat in a diffrent state but you bought it from a SC owner. I work here at Parris Island, also. Since this guy is a Marine on active duty find out what unit he works at and contact his chain of command and notify them that he defrauded you of your money and contact the NCIS office here on base and they take these things very seriously! If it gets to that level! Also let him know of your intentions he should cooperate with his career on the line, minor infractions on your record now will get you out of the Corps real fast, like i said though this threat should be a last resort. Try contacting Kim at the columbia DNR office and see what she can do for you.

How did you fix it? Can you say without violating OPSEC/PERSEC?

prayot2001 said it all! Just a little more publicly.

I just told him if this paperwork is not strait by Thursday, I am hauling it back to Beaufort with all my documentation to this point and let the military police sort it out if he does not return my money.

We will see what happens next.

That will get his attention!!!

Well hopefully this guy gets his things in order. I hate issues like this because it brings a bad image on the military and what most of us really represent. I just hope that this guy was really really busy with his job and couldn’t get to it. By the way what boat did he sell you, not too many boats on Parris Island, so I see the majority of the boats that get launch out of here. We have three boat ramps on Parris Island. It’s nice to launch without all the drama at the public boat ramps.

Well it’s really commom knowledge. Most banks, credit card companies, car/boat/motorcyle/RV dealers, creditors, cell phone carriers and everyone that you owe money too know that to get to a non-paying military personnel you attack him at the source and that is his chain of command. You will lose your secret/top secret clearence with financial/debt issues so fast your new job will be mowing lawns on base because essentially you can’t do anything involving access to goverment resources.

I believe we made some headway today. He bought it from Custom Marine in Statesboro. They have records that should get me squared away. I will know a lot more tomorrow.

I really do not want to be “that guy” I hate when people threaten and pull out the a-hole card right away. He is very busy in what he does but I just had to “remind” him of the urgency of this.

He is a nice guy and I hate that it is going down like this. I really believe he has no malicious intentions, just some screwy paperwork issues.

MattR, what is why I said what I did in the PM. Try to keep it on a level keel and not make too many waves but being able to if you have to! Hope everything works out for you!

yeah seen it around Parris Island couple of times. Mostly seen it used for party boat.

I would imagine its the same one. He said he used it to take women out on rides and sometimes buddies. The livewell was full of beer cans when I went to look at it.

All legal now. The dealer that sold him the boat had all the paperwork to get me strait. I paid my 350$ to DNR and got a couple of pieces of paper in exchange.

this happens a lot in sc, maybe everywhere- people buy a used boat then do not transfer the paperwork, then sell it, new buyer then gets ignored by last owner or person before last owner- my guess is they are afraid of back property taxes. I have seen this problem twice with small junk boats,
with a bigger boat go see dnr first

This is a similar story to mine. I also bought a bought in GA. The previous owner was using the first owner’s registration. I went down to the DNR office at James Island and they said they couldn’t do it. I contacted the guy I bought the boat from, and he called the Columbia office. They told him that I shouldn’t have any problem registering the bought with what I have. I went to Columbia and it was no problem to get it registered. I sure was worried about the mess, and it was a huge relief when I got it straightened out. Good luck with that boat. Its a pretty boat.
