Finger Mullet

When do the finger mullet start showing up a Breach Inlet, the good size ones?

Dear bc72…Breach Inlet is a swirling torrent of tidal movement, and not a place I’d be looking for mullet. Finger mullet are just juvenile mullet, and mullet are here year round. Like most fin fish they are more prolific in warm water inshore, and so they are at peak numbers right now through the early fall. I’d zero in on shallow creeks at low tide to find concentrations of mullet to be caught with a cast net. Look for “pushes” of mullet schools swimming close to the surface…usually along grass edges, small pools behind oyster banks, and on top of mud flats. Don’t be disappointed if you catch bigger mullet…they work great as “cut bait” with a lot of scent generation which is good for bottom rigs like a “carolina rig” of a “fish finder rig”.

Thank Bossdog, I guess I should have made myself a bit clearer. I meant finding the finger mullet on the IOP Ocean side adjacent to the inlet, not in the inlet itself. Last year they were tons of finger mullet in the sandbar area described above. I don’t remember the time of the year when that was though. My last check was they were there but very small.

What size mullet are we talking about? The ones I normally fish with are about as long as my finger (duh). If they are much larger than that, I either cut them up or use them for crab bait. Is that wrong? Just curious because I’ve never had much luck fishing with finger mullet.

Large mullet for large reds. You would be surprised what they will swallow.

BD,

What do you consider a large mullet? 8, 10, 12 inches long? The ones I have fished with are around 3" in length and like I say I have never had any luck. I’m just wondering if “size matters”.

Six to eight inches for the mullet. Clearly you need to be in a place that holds good size fish but you will be surprizesd.
